High School Librarian Position Summary

The High School Librarian serves as an instructional leader, information specialist, literacy advocate, and resource coordinator who creates and maintains a welcoming, student-centered library environment. The librarian manages all aspects of the library program while supporting student achievement through literacy development, information literacy instruction, technology integration, and implementation of the school's Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS). The library serves as a central hub for academic support, intervention services, collaboration, independent learning, and student engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Library Program Management
  • Manage and maintain the high school library, including print, digital, and multimedia resources.
  • Maintain accurate records of library materials, circulation, inventory, and budget expenditures.
  • Evaluate, select, and acquire library resources that support curriculum standards and meet the diverse needs and interests of students.
  • Continuously expand and modernize library collections to support literacy, research, college and career readiness, and student engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal requirements related to library services and instructional materials.
  • Maintain a welcoming, organized, safe, and effective learning environment.
Instructional Support and Literacy Leadership
  • Collaborate with teachers to support curriculum, research projects, literacy initiatives, and instructional goals.
  • Provide direct instruction in information literacy, research skills, media literacy, and digital citizenship.
  • Assist students and staff in locating, evaluating, and utilizing instructional resources and technology tools.
  • Support the integration of technology and digital resources into classroom instruction.
  • Provide professional development and instructional resource support for staff as needed.
  • Promote reading and literacy through book talks, reading programs, displays, events, and student engagement activities.
Student Support and MLSS Coordination
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, teachers, and intervention teams to support implementation of the school's Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS).
  • Assist with data collection, organization, analysis, and reporting to identify students needing academic, behavioral, attendance, literacy, or enrichment interventions.
  • Coordinate and support intervention groups, tutoring opportunities, and student support initiatives within the library setting.
  • Develop and maintain the library as a flexible learning space that supports intervention services, collaborative learning, independent study, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Support student achievement by providing equitable access to resources, academic assistance, and learning opportunities.
Collaboration and School Leadership
  • Partner with administration to review, evaluate, and update library collections to ensure materials are age-appropriate, culturally responsive, relevant, and aligned with student needs.
  • Serve as a resource for students, staff, families, and community partners by promoting access to information, learning opportunities, and library services.
  • Work collaboratively with school leadership to establish the library as a central hub that supports instruction, intervention, literacy, student achievement, and positive school culture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise students utilizing library facilities and resources.
  • Supervise library educational assistants, volunteers, student aides, and other personnel assigned to the library program.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment consistent with district policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Valid New Mexico Teaching License.
  • Valid New Mexico School Librarian License or endorsement.
  • Experience working in a school, public, academic, or related library setting.
  • Knowledge of library management systems, information literacy practices, educational technology, and instructional resources.
  • Strong organizational, communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, families, and community partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous teaching experience in a K–12 educational setting.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Experience supporting literacy initiatives, research instruction, and technology integration.
  • Experience supporting student intervention programs, data analysis, or MLSS implementation.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with teachers and school leaders to improve student achievement and engagement.
