Elementary Music Teacher (Grades 4–6)

Our Elementary Music Teacher plays a vital role in developing students' creativity, musical understanding, confidence, and appreciation for the arts. Through engaging vocal and instrumental instruction, the teacher helps students develop foundational music literacy, performance skills, and artistic expression while fostering collaboration, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation of music. The Elementary Music Teacher creates an inclusive learning environment where every student can experience success and connects music instruction to students' cultural identities and lived experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Deliver High-Quality, Standards-Based Music Instruction- Internalize and effectively implement the district-adopted high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), including understanding instructional intent, standards alignment, and learning progressions.
- Prepare intentionally for instruction by analyzing lesson objectives, anticipated student misconceptions, academic language demands, and opportunities for student engagement and performance.
- Use HQIM as the primary foundation for instruction while making purposeful adjustments to support diverse learners and maintain alignment to grade-level standards and curriculum integrity.
- Deliver engaging vocal and/or instrumental instruction aligned to New Mexico Music Standards.
- Teach foundational musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, expression, notation, music literacy, and performance techniques through singing, movement, instrument playing, listening, composition, and creative exploration.
- Design learning experiences that expose students to diverse musical genres, cultures, historical periods, and traditions while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression.
- Incorporate direct instruction, discussion, cooperative learning, projects, performance, and technology to actively engage students in music learning.
- Provide opportunities for students to interpret musical scores, compose original music, improvise, and perform individually and collaboratively.
- Introduce students to vocal and instrumental techniques appropriate for their developmental level and assess individual student needs.
- Organize and direct school music ensembles, performances, concerts, or other musical experiences as assigned.
- Integrate literacy, academic language development, and critical thinking into daily instruction through standards-aligned learning experiences.
- Reflect on student learning and instructional outcomes to continuously refine instructional practices.
- Establish classroom routines, procedures, and expectations that promote safety, belonging, student ownership, and responsible use of instruments and materials.
- Build strong relationships with students rooted in respect, empathy, and high expectations.
- Foster students' social-emotional development, collaboration, self-regulation, and positive behavior through proactive and responsive classroom practices.
- Maintain music classrooms, instruments, equipment, and instructional materials in good working order and report repair or replacement needs as appropriate.
- Follow district policies and procedures regarding student conduct, safety, and discipline.
- Design and use formative and summative assessments to monitor student understanding, musical growth, and progress toward standards.
- Use ongoing formative assessment to adjust pacing, instructional strategies, scaffolds, and grouping to meet student needs while maintaining rigorous Tier 1 instruction.
