Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

Properly certified in Counseling;

Preferably, counseling and/or teaching experience;

Other qualifications determined to be necessary by the Board.

REPORTS TO: Principal(s)/Director(s) (Bilingual-Federal-Special Programs)

GENERAL SUPERVISOR: Superintendent.

JOB GOAL: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :

Develop and implement a Guidance and Counseling Program for grades Kindergarten through 12 th and meet required timelines and adhere to School Board Policies and State Board Regulations. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Assist students in selecting courses and evaluating their plan programs, aptitudes abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Implements and maintains the EPSS, provide input on performance standards/assessments, administer, and coordinate all school testing program(s), to include: ordering and shipping of materials, New Mexico Portfolio Assessment, New Mexico High School Competency Examination, New Mexico Achievement Assessment, Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, New Mexico Reading Assessment, interprets test data (Elementary, Middle and High School).

Assist the principal or designee with the Master Teaching Schedule by providing necessary input based on student and curriculum needs. (Elementary, Middle and High School).

Work with the Principal/Teacher and attempts to resolve students; educational problems such as: attendance, tardiness, truancy, etc. (Elementary, Middle and High School).

Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and school’s varied opportunities for learning. (Elementary, Middle and High School).

Work with Juvenile Probation Officer in preventing students from dropping out of school due to truancy. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Implement Career Education by assisting students in evaluating career interests and choices to include Armed Services, (applicable to High School)

Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will assist each student in increasing his/her personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity. (Elementary, Middle and High school)

Work with students on an individual basis on the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Interact with students who are having difficulty coping with self-esteem, emotional problems, home situations, peer groups, school environment, cultural identity and behavioral problems. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Plan guidance trips to colleges and industry for interested students as part of Career and College Day. (applicable only to Middle School and High School)

Interpret the guidance and counseling program to the community and encourages students to participate in school and community activities. (Elementary, Middle and High School)

Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality, initiate, assemble, maintain and interpret accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records and uniform transcript records for students. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
