General Job FunctionTo work closely with one or a few disabled pupils, providing the physical help and emotional support they need to gain full benefits from the district’s special education program.
Education and Training- Minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit, with 15 hours in language arts, mathematics, writing, and reading/writing/math readiness or professional education, or
- Associate degree with 15 hours in the same disciplines, or
- High‑school graduate (minimum) or GED, excellent interpersonal skills, and an AA degree or Para Pro exam.
- Prefer prior work with special‑education children.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred.
- Assist students with physical tasks such as moving from room to room and using the restroom.
- Assist students with eating.
- Under the supervision of the special‑education teacher, help students complete school work.
- Accompany students whenever they leave the classroom.
- Establish a supportive relationship with students without fostering intense emotional involvement.
- Guide and help students in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks without teaching them.
- Greet students daily upon arrival and accompany them.
- Assist students in recreation and leisure activities (e.g., swimming, bowling, field trips).
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
- Reinforce learning and enhance skills with individual, small, and large groups.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, and assist with administration of assignments and makeup work.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in oral communication.
- Assist with supervision during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Alert the teacher to any concerns specific to students.
- Assist students in the library or media center and with clothing.
- Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality about students.
- Provide support to substitute teachers in absence of the teacher.
- Operate instructional equipment and assist with classroom displays.
- Collect and record money as assigned and assist with snack, lunch, and bathroom procedures.
- Participate in in‑service training programs.
Walk, talk, and listen regularly; stand and sit frequently; use hands for handling tools; reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; require close, distance, and depth vision; light lifting at times.
Environmental ConditionsThe noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- Familiar with child restraining methods, first aid, and CPR, and capable of using restraint equipment if necessary.
- Reliability demonstrated by attendance records and punctuality.

- Appropriate attire for the work environment.
- Skill in equipment use and protective use of district resources.
- Use of proper body mechanics to prevent strain or injury.
Upon offer of employment, pass a pre‑employment drug test, comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1968, pass a background check, and provide necessary documentation.
Terms of Employment: Determined by student needs.
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated per the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
