Job Description

Attention to all instructional assistant applicants.

To qualify for instructional assistant positions, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Passing score on the Para Pro exam (457)
  • Minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university, with at least 15 of those credits dedicated to language arts (3 hours), mathematics (3 hours), writing (3 hours), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6 hours).

SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to provide instruction for students in information and technology literacy. Assist students and staff in selecting appropriate resources and to oversee the selection, organization, utilization and maintenance of library services.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Skillfully navigate the online library circulation system (Follett Destiny).
  • Maintain and execute a budget for purchasing library materials and supplies.
  • Prepare orders, check in new orders, and process cataloged materials.
  • Maintain library collection, including circulation, shelving, weeding the collection as necessary, and conduct a yearly inventory.
  • Present instructional lessons to classes; guide students with online resources and promote appropriate conduct of students using the library‑media center.
  • Attend pre‑scheduled class visits for instruction in the use of Library Online Public Access Catalog (Follett Destiny), library skills, storytelling, and the circulation of books.
  • Assist students and teachers in locating needed materials and information; suggest useful materials for curriculum units; prepare and distribute resource lists of new materials.
  • Maintain an account of patrons served by the library and prepare statistical reports that reflect both library usage and circulation.
  • Create displays to stimulate reading and the use of the library.
  • Establish and maintain a congenial and cooperative working relationship with all staff and students.
  • Maintain a well‑organized, manageable and attractive library.
  • Maintain accurate records on the use and condition of audiovisual and other materials in accordance with established procedures.
  • Participate in in‑service programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to file, type, and understand the library organizational system.
  • Ability to work with library application software, Microsoft Windows operating system, and computer application programs (Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to work with various types of audiovisual equipment and office equipment.
  • Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with middle and secondary students.

Education And/Or Experience

One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of 48 semester hours of academic credit that includes 15 semester hours in language arts, reading, writing, mathematics or professional education (earned from a nationally or regionally accredited college/university); or passage of the Educational Assistant Assessment (Para Pro, Para Educator, and Basic Skills).

New Mexico Public Education Educational Assistant License required.
