Early Childhood Instruction Position Summary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Instructional Assistance
  • Project Oversight
  • Project Facilitation:
    Actively assist Lead Teachers in delivering STEAHM (Science and Sociology, Technology and Trades, Engineering, Art and Allied Health, Humanities, Math and Medicine)-based lessons; help students execute complex projects such as engineering builds, artistic creations, or scientific experiments.
  • Small Group Leadership:
    Lead breakout groups of K-12 students to ensure they understand project steps and safety protocols.
  • Lab & Shop Safety:
    Provide vigilant oversight during hands-on activities, ensuring all students follow safety guidelines.
  • Experiment Support:
    Set up, tear down, and maintain materials for daily experiments and activities across the STEAHM spectrum.
  • Mentorship and Student Engagement Differentiated Support:
    Identify students struggling with specific concepts (e.g., Math or History) and provide one-on-one, in-the-moment tutoring/mentoring to keep them on track with the group project. Coordinate annual open enrollment, including system configuration and employee communication.
  • Engagement:
    Encourage student curiosity and participation; serve as a positive role model for younger students exploring higher education environments.
  • Administrative and Operations Reporting:
    Assist the Lead Teacher in tracking student attendance and participation; provide feedback to the Program Director on project efficacy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

BROAD STEAM COMPETENCY Interdisciplinary Knowledge:
General aptitude or interest in the STEAHM pillars. Technical Literacy:
Ability to use basic hand tools (Trades), scientific lab equipment (Medicine/Science), and digital software (Technology/Math). Pedagogical Skill:
Ability to simplify complex concepts for K-12 age groups (Elementary through High School).

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL FACTORS

Physical Activity:
This is an active role. TAs must be able to stand for long periods, move between classrooms/labs, and lift up to 25 pounds of project materials or equipment. Setting:
Work occurs in various environments, including standard classrooms, computer labs, communal garden, vocational trades shops, and outdoor field sites.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES

Requirement:
Strong academic record in at least two STEAHM-related fields.

Experience:

Previous experience working with K-12 children (camp counselor, coach, or tutor) is highly preferred. Clearance:
Must successfully pass Luna Community College’s Background Clearance process, specifically for working with minors.

Schedule and Locations

This position is Part-Time 3-20 hours per week depending on season. During the normal school year, the average hours worked for the After-School program are 2-3 hours per week depending on responsibilities assigned and may be higher depending on growth of the program and need. During the Summer, the average hours worked are typically 10-20 but could be higher during weeks that have fields trips.
