FEA Engineer
Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms. Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 – 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.
Sceye, a leading aerospace company at the forefront of space exploration and technology, is seeking a talented FEA Engineer to join our team. This role will focus on the design, analysis, and optimization of aerospace components and structures through advanced simulations and analysis techniques. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play an essential role in ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and performance of critical components used in spacecraft, rockets, and satellite systems.
JobPurpose
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Perform FEA simulations to analyze the mechanical behavior of aerospace components, including stress, strain, thermal, vibration, and fatigue analysis. Ensure that all components meet the required performance, safety, and reliability standards.
- Design Support & Optimization: Work closely with design engineers to provide FEA insights and optimization strategies for aerospace structures, ensuring that components are designed for maximum efficiency, weight reduction, and performance while maintaining safety margins.
- Simulation & Modeling: Create and refine 3D models of spacecraft, rocket components, and related systems for simulation. Use industry-standard FEA software (such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or COMSOL) to simulate and validate designs under a range of operational conditions.
- Materials & Structural Integrity: Analyze the mechanical properties of materials and ensure the structural integrity of aerospace components under various loading conditions, including extreme temperatures, pressure, and acceleration.
- Test Correlation & Validation: Collaborate with the testing team to correlate FEA predictions with physical test data. Use the results to refine simulations and improve design accuracy.
- Data Collection & Reporting: Collect, analyze, and interpret simulation data. Document and report findings, including detailed recommendations for design improvements based on FEA results.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other engineering teams (such as propulsion, systems integration, and manufacturing) to ensure that FEA insights are integrated into the overall product development process.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure that all FEA work adheres to aerospace industry standards and safety regulations. Participate in design reviews and ensure that designs meet or exceed required safety factors.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in FEA or structural analysis, preferably in the aerospace or defense industries. Experience with analyzing complex aerospace structures and components is highly desirable.
- Technical Skills (Must haves):
- Proficiency in FEA tools (ANSYS preferred but Abaqus, NASTRAN etc. accepted)
- Strong understanding of structural mechanics, material science, and mechanical properties
- Familiar with material, geometric, and contact nonlinear analyses
- Knowledge of aerospace materials and manufacturing processes
- Proficiency in explicit dynamics FEA solvers like LS-Dyna (e.g., Vehicle crash, Drop Tests, Fabrics/Airbag simulation)
- Proficiency in design and simulation of composite structures (laminates, sandwich panels, ply-level allowables, failure criteria)
- Experience with free-body diagrams and classical stress analysis techniques
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot issues and optimize designs through simulation. Ability to recommend innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with CAD software (such as Solid Works, CATIA, or Siemens NX) and FEA software. Proficiency in MS Office for documentation and reporting is also required.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively document FEA results, provide technical reports, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Attention to Detail: High attention to detail and ability to perform accurate and precise work in a complex and dynamic engineering environment.
- Experience with aerospace structural components such as airframes, rocket bodies, propulsion systems, or satellite systems.
- Familiarity with advanced materials, including composites, metals, and high-performance alloys used in aerospace applications.
- Previous experience in space exploration or with space agencies (e.g., NASA, ESA).
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability…
