Registered Nurses (RN) provide a full range of nursing services to inmates, including assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of medical condition. RNs collaborate with the healthcare team to maintain or restore patients’ health status and uphold the security of the institution.
EssentialJob Duties
- Assess and identify health problems of new inmates and initiate medical records and special needs POR’s.
- Respond to daily medical issues and emergencies with patients.
- Administer prescribed treatments and medications as medically required.
- Prepare medical equipment, records, and exam rooms; assist the provider as needed.
- Practice sound pharmacology in preparation, maintenance, administration, and documentation of prescribed drugs and IV therapies.
- Maintain IVs for IV therapies as needed.
- Meet regularly with the HSA to review medical services; may serve as Charge Nurse or Acting Supervisor in the HSA’s absence.
- Know emergency procedures and appropriate action plans for emergencies or crisis situations.
- Provide CPR instructions and lead CPR emergencies; if trained, use AED equipment.
- Use standard medical equipment safely (AED, EKG, blood pressure device, oxygen, sterilization, glucometer, Doppler, pulse oximeter).
- Apply logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and make decisions.
- Delegate tasks appropriately to lower‑level licensure employees.
- Educate patients on diet, hygiene, and prevention of chronic diseases.
- Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the state accrediting agent at completion.
- Current, unrestricted license as Registered Nurse; must maintain license.
- Experience in correctional healthcare preferred, but not required.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication with coworkers, supervisors, jail administration, and patients.
- Excellent verbal and written comprehension.
- Excellent deductive reasoning and problem‑solving abilities.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to use and learn computer software, including site‑specific programs.
- Respect inmates’ dignity and confidentiality.
- Maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc.
- Maintain current CPR/BLS certification.
- Maintain current TB test (within one year).
- Adhere to all facility policies and procedures, including those in the Employee Handbook.
- Provide overtime and assist coworkers as required; act as resource to coworkers.
- Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance with protected health information.
- Undergo security training and orientation on facility safety policies.
- Remain stationary and move throughout facility, including stairs.
- Position oneself in various spaces.
- Communicate effectively with patients.
- Detect objects and assess situations from various distances.
- Remain calm under stress.
- Transport objects up to 50 lbs.
Work is performed inside a correctional facility. Employees may be exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and other risks. Employees must follow all security rules to minimize danger.
Other RequirementsCompliance with all State, Federal, and Local laws and regulations, court orders, and internal policies. Treat all individuals with dignity and respect. Background check and pre‑employment drug test complete.
