job purpose

the certified nursing assistant (cna) position exists to provide vital, direct patient care that supports the physical, emotional, and social needs of residents or patients. Cnas play a crucial role in assisting individuals with activities of daily living (adls) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, toileting, and mobility. They help maintain residents comfort, dignity, and safety while promoting independence whenever possible.

They serve as the front-line caregivers who monitor residents conditions, communicate changes to nursing staff, and contribute to a compassionate, person-centered care environment. This role helps licensed nurses manage their workload more effectively, ensuring timely and quality care that meets regulatory standards and enhances overall resident outcomes.

responsibilities

assist residents with activities of daily living (adls) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and feeding. Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) accurately. Monitor residents physical and mental condition; observe and promptly report any changes to nursing staff. Assist with mobility, transfers, repositioning, and ambulation to promote safety and prevent complications. Provide compassionate emotional support and companionship to residents.

Follow infection control procedures and safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (ppe). Document care provided and resident observations clearly and thoroughly in medical records. Assist with meal preparation and feeding, monitoring residents nutritional intake and swallowing difficulties. Perform basic housekeeping duties, such as cleaning resident rooms and changing bed linens. Participate actively in care planning and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.

Educate and support new staff and associate cnas by demonstrating proper care techniques and facility policies. Mentor new staff by answering questions, providing feedback, and encouraging adherence to best practices. Uphold residents rights and confidentiality in compliance with legal and ethical standards. Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or safety concerns following facility and regulatory guidelines. Assist with the use of medical equipment as allowed within scope of practice.

Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for residents at all times. Practice universal precautions and infection control procedures consistently. Ensure resident rooms and personal items are kept clean, organized, and comfortable. Support efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment for all residents. Communicate effectively with residents, families, nursing staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. Participate in shift reports, care planning discussions, and training as required.

Respond to call lights and resident needs promptly and respectfully. Maintain certification and training in good standing (including cpr/first aid if required). Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines. Support the facility's mission to provide person-centered, quality care at all times.

ideal candidate

the ideal candidate for this certified nursing assistant (cna) position is a dependable and compassionate professional with at least 2 years or more hands-on experience in a long-term care or similar healthcare setting. They must have a current and active certified nursing assistant (cna) certificate in the state of new mexico. They demonstrate strong clinical skills in assisting residents with activities of daily living, taking and accurately recording vital signs, and recognizing changes in resident conditions.

This candidate communicates clearly and works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring seamless care coordination. They follow infection control protocols diligently and maintain detailed documentation in compliance with facility policies and regulatory standards. The ideal cna is also skilled at providing emotional support, maintaining resident dignity, and promoting independence. Experience mentoring or supporting new staff is a plus, as this role involves helping onboard and educate less experienced team members.
