POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Assistant EMS Coordinator Employment Term: 12 Months Full time

Division: Health Services Department: EMS

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt Funding Source: IHS Contract

Qualification
  • Must be at least 18 years old; sober, of good character, physically fit, and a high school graduate or hold a GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a New Mexico approved Emergency Medical Technician Basic or Intermediate training certificate/license.
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license, CPR and First Aid Card.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, in order to instruct staff, confer with the EMS Coordinator, Medical Director, Health Services Director and other public service professionals regarding program service issues and development, and to write memos and reports consistent with program requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand technical material related to delivery of emergency medical services by the EMS staff and medical providers.
  • Ability to supervise employees, maintain good working relationships with clinic staff, and to maintain good public relations with the community users of EMS as well as the major referral agencies for Alamo Navajo patients, e.g., Socorro General Hospital and the Indian Health Service.
  • Working understanding of the State of New Mexico EMS Bureau, EMS Statewide Communications Network, licensing requirements for EMT’s, etc.
  • Ability to maintain composure while dealing with all types of accidents and emergencies, to make on the spot decisions regarding medical treatment in the field pursuant to established protocols, and to exercise good judgment at all times.
  • Knowledge of the Alamo Navajo community, its people and resources preferred.
  • EMT Paramedic is desired.
  • Ability to speak English and Navajo fluently preferred.
  • Indian Preference

    Preferential consideration for employment will be given to persons of documented Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Native tribal membership, who meet the qualifications above, in accordance with the requirements of P.L. 93-638 and the Navajo Tribal Code.

    Supervised by: EMS Coordinator

    Supervises: First Responders/Trainees and EMTs in the absence of EMS Coordinator.

    Pay Range: Grade J, on ANSB's General Salary Scale, at the EMT-Basic level; and Grade K at the EMT
    - Intermediate level. Responsibilities include being on call with Compensation at $2.50 per hour and $50.00 base phone stipend.

    Lunch Hour: One hour lunch (flexible)

    Position Goal

    To assist the EMS Coordinator with duties related to supervision, ordering of supplies, inventory, vehicle maintenance and other administrative tasks given by the EMS Coordinator in support of the overall EMS operation; serves as Acting EMS Coordinator as needed, and first and foremost to perform the normal duties of an EMT according to certification/licensure protocols while on scheduled shift as calls dictate.

    Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work with the EMS Coordinator to ensure 24-hour coverage by two on-duty personnel (one of whom is at least EMT-B or higher)
  • Assists the EMS Coordinator to ensure that the EMS logbook, run reports, and other service documentation is completed in a timely manner, and that confidential records are treated and stored appropriately.
  • Assists the EMS Coordinator to ensure the maintenance of emergency vehicles, equipment, radios, and other program resources by EMS staff.
  • In the absence of the EMS Coordinator, provides supervision of the EMS staff, maintains the 24-hour schedule, approves EMS staff leave and training requests, completes and verifies biweekly timesheet; and initiates disciplinary actions as indicated in consultation with the Medical Director and Health Services Director; may also hold staff meetings and perform annual evaluations, if necessary.
  • Assists the EMS Coordinator with other duties, at her request, including but not limited to: orienting/training new personnel in the EMS program; organizing certification training; inventorying and ordering supplies through the requisition process.
