Job Description

The Safety Manager develops, implements, and oversees safety programs for all Haak’u Health facilities and properties, including the Haak’u Health Center, warehouse, central supply area, modular buildings, and housing complex. The position helps protect patients, employees, visitors, contractors, facilities, and organizational assets by developing and implementing safety policies, identifying hazards, reducing risks, promoting safe work practices, and supporting the organization’s efforts to meet applicable accreditation standards and federal, state, tribal, and organizational safety requirements.

The Safety Manager also coordinates emergency preparedness, fire and life safety, and risk-reduction efforts in collaboration with organizational leaders, department managers, and tribal and local emergency response agencies

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Develop, implement, evaluate, and improve the organization’s healthcare and occupational safety program.

· Serve as the primary resource for occupational safety, hazard prevention, and safe work practices.

· Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments; identify hazards, recommend controls, assign corrective actions, and verify completion.

· Oversee safety related to facilities, utilities, equipment, hazardous materials and waste, construction activities, and access to care areas.

· Coordinate emergency preparedness, continuity planning, fire and life safety, evacuation procedures, drills, exercises, debriefings, and improvement plans.

· Collaborate with Infection Prevention and Quality on occupational safety programs, including hazard communication, blood borne pathogens, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, ergonomics, environment of care rounds, and injury prevention.

· Take immediate action to correct, stop, or escalate conditions that threaten people, property, or operations.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

· Develop and maintain safety policies, procedures, plans, records, and program documents.

· Maintain readiness for accreditation surveys, regulatory reviews, and internal audits, including corrective action and follow-up.

· Participate in assigned committees and handle sensitive safety and personnel matters with confidentiality, sound judgment, and cultural respect.

· Prepares and presents safety reports to leadership and appropriate committees, including information on incidents, identified hazards, inspection findings, corrective actions, training activities, compliance concerns, and safety trends.

· Collaborates with the CQE to identify and plan for safety-related budget needs, contracts, equipment, and other required resources.

· Coordinate staff orientation and ongoing education on safety and emergency procedures.

· Collaborate with Quality, Human Resources, Employee Health, Infection Prevention, Clinical Services, Nursing, Facilities, and department leaders to support safe operations.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Associates degree in:
    • Occupational Safety and Health
    • Environmental Health & Safety
    • Healthcare Administration
    • or Related field
  • Experience:
  • 5+ years of progressive safety experience and 3+ years of supervisory or management experience

Experience in:

    • Healthcare or ambulatory care settings
    • Risk management
    • Emergency preparedness
    • Regulatory compliance

Experience supervising staff, addressing performance concerns, administering corrective actions, conducting safety-related investigations, and supporting positive workplace relationships is preferred.

Certifications and Training:

Preferred certifications to include:

  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)
  • Certified Safety Manager (CSM)
  • Certified Healthcare Safety Manager (CHSM)
