Job title:
detention corporal salary: $24.44
Department: adult detention center position status: full-time
Flsa status: non-exempt union eligibility: non- eligible
Description:
performs a variety working level technical and leads correction/detention duties intended to assure compliance with adult detention center operational policies, practices and procedures. Maintains safety and security of the detention center and proper day to day care of inmates.
Experience & education:
Graduation from high school and successful completion of specialized training provided by an approved standards and training organization or through in-service;
And
Two (2) years of experience performing above and related duties;
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Mandatory knowledge, skills, abilities and other qualifications:
Working knowledge of the criminal justice system; care and inmate management; general supervision techniques applied in a detention environment; general law enforcement practices and procedures; law enforcement; principles, methods and techniques of effective supervision; legal environment associated with law enforcement; local, state and federal laws and regulations; criminal codes and jail standards; departmental standard operating procedures; fundamentals of proper search and seizure;
inmate classification methods and guidelines, federal, state and local laws and regulations related to jail activities; new mexico criminal code, new mexico jail standards, courtroom security methods and processes, court processes and protocol, computer operations and related software; elementary first aid techniques and procedures and cpr; basic principles of psychology and sociology; complex records management systems and legal guidelines.
Skill in the operation of security equipment.
Ability to deal effectively with work related stress related workplace liabilities; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; manage physical aggression in detainees; direct and maintain confidentiality in managing sensitive legal issues and cases; restrain physically violent prisoners; react quickly to novel situations under conditions of stress; operate a variety of types of office machines; personal computer or terminal operation; write legible reports;
develop effective working relationships with elected officials, legal professionals, law enforcement agencies; subordinates, and the public.
Must be 18 years of age.
Must possess a valid new mexico driver's license.
Must be willing to work on-call and shift assignments.
Must complete "safe physical management & passive restraint" course.
Must be a certified detention officer and maintain annually required training hours.
