Why does the job exist?The position of Associate Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) supports the delivery of safe, high‑quality, person‑centered care to residents under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. The Associate CNA ensures residents’ basic needs are met in accordance with individualized care plans, including assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), hygiene, mobility, nutrition, and toileting. The role promotes resident dignity, comfort, and safety while contributing to infection control, documentation compliance, and regulatory adherence.
Howdoes it get done?
- Assist residents with ADLs such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and ambulation.
- Provide comfort and emotional support while respecting resident dignity.
- Ensure resident safety using assistive devices and fall‑prevention protocols.
- Observe and promptly report changes in residents’ physical or mental condition.
- Measure and record vital signs and intake/output as directed.
- Document care and resident responses in accordance with facility policies.
- Assist with safe lifting, repositioning, and transfers using proper body mechanics or mechanical lifts.
- Escort residents to activities, appointments, or meals as needed.
- Practice universal precautions and infection control procedures consistently.
- Maintain clean, organized resident rooms and personal items.
- Communicate effectively with residents, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team.
- Participate in shift reports, care planning discussions, and training as required.
- Respond to call lights and resident needs promptly and respectfully.
- Maintain certification and training in good standing (including CPR/first aid when required).
- Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
Primary customers are veterans who are unable to live independently due to failing health, along with their families, including Gold Star parents and widows of service members.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate holds a current Certified Nursing Assistant certification in New Mexico with 0–2 years’ experience. Foundational skills in assisting residents with basic ADLs such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility support are essential, as is a willingness to learn, follow directions, and provide respectful, patient‑centered care. Strong communication, reliability, punctuality, a positive attitude, basic infection control knowledge, and commitment to facility policies are required.
Flexibility to work various shifts and adapt to resident and facility needs is critical.
Certification as a Certified Medication Aide (CMA), Home Health Aide (HHA), Nursing Aide (CNA), or eligibility to attain certification.
Employment Requirements- Must possess and maintain a current Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate from the State of New Mexico.
- Must possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association BLS/CPR Certification.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate or obtain it within one week of hire.
- Must complete HIPAA training.
- Must sign and observe a confidentiality agreement.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
- Must succeed in pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol testing as required by federal and state law.
- Subject to mandatory criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act.
- Position is safety sensitive.
- May require occasional travel for training, meetings, and driving a state‑owned motor vehicle.
- Working hours may include weekends, holidays, overtime, callback hours, on‑call, nights, and extended hours.
- Essential functions and physical ability requirements available at interview.
- Work performed in a long‑term care facility with frequent walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, and stretching.
- Must function under pressure and stressful situations.
- Exposure to contagious viruses, diseases, and bodily fluids; possible physical or verbal abuse.
- May require occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a state‑owned motor vehicle.
- Extended work hours may be required to meet deadlines.

The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement; all terms and conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
