** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.

In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:

The School Cook prepares or oversees the preparation of a variety of food times found in breakfast and lunch meals or any combination thereof and a variety of food items. The School Cook observes work and checks periodically to see that the work is being done on time and according to instructions. The School Cook is expected to be fully aware of all food handler safety concerns as demonstrated by possession of a valid State Food Handler Certificate.

Performs a variety of food preparation duties and cooking with little or no supervision which include:  
• Preparation of food items following simple recipes (cake mixes, etc.); adjusting simple recipes; preparing fresh vegetable items by frying, boiling, baking, etc.; and preparing frequent-use recipes.  
• Cooking, grilling/frying meats, poultry and fish items, chilling/heating canned fruits and vegetables; weighing and measuring recipe ingredients; and preparing beverages, salads and other non-cooking items.  
• Assists in maintaining sanitation regulations in all areas of the food service unit including outside areas.  
• Assists with unloading food and kitchen supplies and in assuring that foods are properly rotated upon storage and at time of use.  
• Works in the dish room, loading and unloading dishwasher, stacking and storing dishes and assures proper care and maintenance of the dish washing equipment.  
• Develops and/or follows and pre-established menu, using expertise to substitute items as necessary.  
• Responsible for ordering food using established procedures.  
• Maintain accurate and timely records according to program requirements and department procedures.
