School-Based Social Worker

Position Overview

The School Social Worker provides direct and indirect services to support students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success. This role works closely with students, families, educators, administrators, and community agencies to ensure students receive the support and resources necessary to thrive in the educational setting.

  • Provide school social work services to students receiving special education services as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Deliver individual and group counseling services to students and families.
  • Conduct social and developmental history evaluations as requested by Student Assistance Teams and IEP teams.
  • Participate as a member of multidisciplinary teams and IEP meetings to support educational planning and student progress.
  • Provide crisis intervention, family assessments, case management, and referral services.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to coordinate resources and support services for students and families.
  • Consult with teachers, administrators, and school staff regarding student social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • Foster strong relationships with students, families, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Promote parent engagement through communication, outreach efforts, and home visits when appropriate.
  • Monitor and communicate student progress related to academic, social, and behavioral goals.
  • Develop and provide staff training and educational programs as requested.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Adhere to all district policies, New Mexico Public Education Department regulations, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Support district initiatives focused on student safety, well-being, and educational success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution.
  • Valid New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) School Social Worker License or eligibility to obtain licensure.
  • Knowledge of special education regulations, IEP processes, and school-based social work practices preferred.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to travel between school sites and community locations when required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize computers, software programs, and electronic documentation systems.
