Position Summary:

The Elementary School Counselor will support students’ academic, social, and emotional development. The School Counselor will foster student growth through a developmental counseling curriculum, individualized support, and collaborative school initiatives to ensure student success and preparation for the future.

Reports To:

School Principal

Key Responsibilities:

Developmental Counseling Curriculum:

  • Implement the district’s developmental school counseling curriculum and maintain data on student performance and program effectiveness.
  • Facilitate students’ academic, personal/social, and career development.
  • Provide instruction in social, emotional, and behavioral learning, supporting classroom teachers as needed.

Individual Student Planning:

  • Chair and manage the Section 504 process in accordance with district expectations.
  • Assist students in developing and updating Student Success Plans to support academic, social, and career goals.

Responsive Services:

  • Provide individual and small group counseling to address student needs.
  • Maintain high availability to students and proactively support their well‑being.
  • Build positive relationships with students and families, providing outreach and engagement.
  • Respond to crises and participate in the school crisis team.
  • Assess student needs and analyze data to inform interventions and programming.

Collaboration:

  • Participate in the school’s SRBI implementation to promote student success.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community resources to support students.
  • Contribute expertise to school teams, including Crisis Team, PBIS Team, Data Team, and Student Assistance Team.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of students and families.
  • Support smooth student transitions across grades and schools.
  • Advocate for programs and experiences that enhance student achievement and career opportunities.
  • Engage in professional development and uphold the ethical standards of the American School Counselors Association.
Qualifications:
  • Connecticut State Certification as a School Counselor (068) required.
  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in school counseling preferred; relevant experience considered.
Work Environment & Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Work primarily in school and office settings.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and clear verbal communication are required.
FLSA Status:

Exempt
