The Public Works Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of the Borough’s fleet, equipment, and machinery. This position performs skilled mechanical work on cars, trucks, heavy equipment, emergency generators, landscaping equipment, fire apparatus and other municipal assets to ensure safe and reliable operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on cars, trucks, loaders, fire trucks, busses, backhoes, excavators, mowers, generators, pumps, and related equipment.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and metal repair work.
- Maintain maintenance records and repair logs.
- Conduct vehicle DOT safety inspections and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns during emergencies, storms, snow operations, and after-hours incidents.
- Assist with snow and ice removal operations as needed.
- Operate municipal vehicles and equipment when required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License class “B” with tanker endorsement (CDL).
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance practices.
- Ability to safely use diagnostic tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
- Must have the tools and equipment necessary to perform repairs.
- CDL Class B with tanker endorsement or higher.
- Graduation from accredited mechanics school, ASE certifications.
- Experience maintaining municipal fleets, heavy equipment, and diesel engines.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
Ability to lift to 75 pounds, work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in repair shops, garages, roadways, construction sites, and outdoor environments. Employees may be exposed to noise, moving machinery, chemicals, fuels, weather extremes, and emergency situations.
