Job Summary
The position provides technical and engineering support for instrumentation and testing facilities of the Boysie Bollinger School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, particularly the school's towing and wave tank. The LSU New Orleans Towing and Wave Tank plays a central role as teaching and research laboratory for the maritime industries. The lab also features prominently in the recruitment of engineering students.
Many tours and demonstrations are conducted for students of regional schools and visiting dignitaries alike throughout the year. Only a few facilities like it exist in the United States. Instrumentation and associated software interfaces often have to be adapted to specific needs or need to be developed from scratch in some cases. The School plans major improvements to the towing tank in the near future.
The instrumentation engineer will be integral to the specification and implementation of systems.
Laboratory and Facilities Support
- Assure that all laboratories are organized, stocked, in safe working order
- Support of the maintenance, operation, repair and development of instrumentation and equipment associated with the NAME teaching and research laboratories
- Assure that computers supporting teaching and research laboratories are maintained with appropriate software and hardware
- Develop software for data acquisition, processing and control (NI Lab View, Python, etc)
- Perform model testing in the LSU New Orleans Towing and Wave Tank
- Support the recruiting of undergraduate and graduate students
- Other duties as assigned by NAME Chair
Instructional Support for Faculty and Students
- Assist NAME faculty in demonstration, setup, and execution of experiments and demonstrations
- Develop and maintain the data acquisition and control software of the laboratories
- Instruct students in the safe operation of equipment
- Provide testing and other engineering support/expertise for industry interactions, outreach activities, and other special projects
- Assist NAME faculty and graduate students with their research efforts
- Additional duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, naval architecture and marine engineering, or related field
- Experience in model testing and NI Lab View program development
- Ability to develop and manufacture electronic circuits
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Ability to read mechanical/electrical drawings, and read and develop circuit diagrams
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree.
- Familiarity with motion capturing and particle image velocimetry (PIV) systems
- Familiarity with programming and integrating Arduino microcontrollers
- Familiarity with CAD and shipbuilding software
- Experience in model testing
- Experience in teaching/training
