Position Summary
Performs skilled technical communications work in the operation of the 9-1-1 system, receiving and transmitting information by the radio, telephone, and computer terminal. Work involves the exercise of independent judgement in transmitting law enforcement information and responding to inquiries, complaints and requests for emergency assistance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities 9-1-1- Operates the Brown County 9-1-1 system, NCIC, MINCIS, and in‑house computer terminals, receives incoming calls and dispatches required emergency vehicles, answers inquiries or refers calls to the appropriate agencies.
- Receives and transmits telephone and radio messages and monitors activities of law enforcement, medical, fire, civil defense, municipal utility and county highway units. Logs radio calls, completes initial reports and computer data entry when action is taken.
- Receives requests from emergency services on call and provides assistance to the units requesting information, services or personnel.
- Broadcasts and enters notices for wanted persons, stolen or suspect vehicles, driver records, vehicle registration, stolen property, criminal record checks, and other information as requested.
- Requests and receives information on the Minnesota criminal justice information system (MINCIS). Operates computer terminals linked to state, federal and interstate law‑enforcement agencies.
- Monitors numerous radio frequencies with other law‑enforcement agencies to request or provide assistance and information.
- Maintains activity logs and records, prepares reports, and performs related clerical duties as required or assigned.
- Serves as the county warning point for civil defense. Monitors weather conditions, coordinates communications, and operates county‑wide warning system for natural or man‑made disasters.
- Monitors by radio or telephone automatic alarm systems.
- Assists the general public in the lobby of the building.
- Performs light housekeeping duties required to maintain the communications center in a clean and orderly condition.
- Knows which deputies and officers are on duty and their locations.
- Makes copies and gives out police reports to agencies as set forth by department policy.
- All other duties as apparent and as assigned by supervisory staff in the Sheriff’s Office.
- Assists in training new dispatch staff including monitoring progress, reporting concerns, providing any needed additional training and evaluation.
- Attends trainings and maintains professional knowledge. Complete all required online and in‑person training.
- Responsibility to read, acknowledge and comply with the dispatch policies contained in the Policy Manual and any revisions made to it.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Minimum qualification is a combination of high school diploma and preferred minimum of 2 or more years related experience.
- Obtain all required Dispatcher State Licenses/Certifications.
- Employee evaluations in good standing.
- Current on Emergency Medical Responder Certification or EMT Certification (Biennial Refresher).
- All required online 911 Dispatcher trainings completed as defined by the Communications Lieutenant.
- BCA/CJIS Portals and security awareness training completed and current (Biennial Refresher).
- Armer console training completed and current (Biennial Refresher).
- Current on dispatch/Lexipol policy review and policy changes.
- Possesses all required State licensure or certification.
- Assist in the training of new Dispatch staff.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to learn and operate a variety of telephone, radio and computer equipment.
- Ability to type accurately.
- Ability to learn the geographical layout, political and community service jurisdictions, and highway systems of the county.
- Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
