Position: FT Correctional Officer I

The Correctional Officer I is responsible for the security, health, welfare and safety of inmates in the County's jail facility, and the effective delivery of correctional services through the observance of all federal and state laws, county ordinances, correctional policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Responsibilities may include supervising inmates and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure the security of assigned area and personnel;

performing well-being checks; searching cells and inmates; performing booking and release duties; and recording medical information; maintaining applicable documents. Incumbents of this position may be relied upon for providing credible and effective testimony in court and elsewhere. It is of utmost importance that persons in this position conduct themselves in a manner both at work and outside of work in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to be able to provide credible and effective testimony.

Corrections
  • Supervise inmates, perform well-being checks, administer medication, search cells and inmates and enforce rules and regulations to ensure safety and security of assigned area and personnel.
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the facility.
  • Must be able to keep accurate logs and update files.
  • Book and release inmates; screen inmates for behaviors, attitudes, and interests and record medical information and property brought into the jail facility.
  • Conduct daily indiscriminate strip searches of work release inmates upon return from work.
  • Monitor volunteers that come in to provide activities for the inmates.
  • See to the daily needs of the inmates.
  • Can be a bailiff for court at times and make occasional transports.
  • Receive training in federal, state and local laws as they apply in law enforcement and detention facilities, including federal and state correction standards.
  • Predatory Offender Registration Checks
  • Miscellaneous duties as apparent or assigned by supervisory staff.

  • Attend trainings and maintain professional knowledge.
  • Complete all required online and in-person training.
  • Responsible to read, acknowledge and comply with the jail policies contained in the Policy Manual and any revisions made to it.
Education
  • Minimum qualification is a combination of high school diploma and preferred 2 or more years of related experience.
  • Obtain all required Correctional Officer State Licenses/Certifications within 12 months of position hire date.
Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
  • Successful completion of background check and criminal history review.
  • First Responder (48 hours)
  • First Responder Refresher Course every two years (16 hours)
  • BCA Teletype Certification (24 hours)
  • BCA Re-Certification test every two years
  • Defensive Tactics yearly (4 hours)
  • Use of Force training yearly (4 hours)
  • Taser Training yearly (I hour)
  • Medication Distribution Training (8 hours)
  • Medication Re-Certification every two years (2 hours)
  • Prison Rape Elimination Act training
  • Restraint Chair Training (annually)
  • FEMA Emergency Preparedness training every 2 years (8 hours)
  • Armer Radio Training.
  • Ability to exhibit mature judgment, imagination, initiative and problem‑solving skills in dealing with inmates.
  • Must be knowledgeable in all county and jail policies, procedures and operations.
  • Must be proficient in the use of the jail and State computer systems.
  • Ability to deal with inmates with tact and impartiality.
  • Ability to react effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and to write factual reports.
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition and mental stability to work in an environment that has the constant potential and exposure to risks of serious injury and exposures to contagious diseases.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, law enforcement, other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to develop skill in the use and care of county equipment used in the jail system.
