Duties and responsibilities
This internship announcement is valid for one (1) candidate who will intern in the public inquiries unit (piu), and in the group programmes unit (gpu), visitors services section. Visitors services is part of the outreach division, department of global communications in new york city, which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the united nations.
The visitors services section interfaces directly with the general public to offer guided tours of un headquarters in new york and briefings with un expert speakers, as well as a public inquiries counter where visitors can obtain information materials and ask questions. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in new york but could be adjusted based on the availability of the successful candidate, the nature of the tasks, needs of the units and/or section, and the discretion of the manager.
Full-time interns work five days a week (35 hours) and part-time interns work less than 34 hours a week. This is under the supervision of a staff member in the unit(s) within the visitors services section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. This internship is unpaid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the unit to which he/she is assigned, and the period during which he/she undertakes the internship.
Interns' responsibilities may include but not limited to:
• to assist with outreach activities to educate the public about the un's work by providing support for guided tours, briefings, events, and multimedia projects
• to provide assistance in conducting research on un thematic issues
• to provide assistance in drafting correspondence, short articles, text for fact sheets, social media content, and other communications materials
• to provide assistance in responding to visitors' queries in person and in writing
• to assist with the development, implementation, and analysis of surveys on visitors' experience
• to assist with taking photographs and videos
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the two following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) applicants to the un internship programme are not required to have professional work experience;
however, a field of study that is related to the type of internship is required. Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially ms word and ms power point, is required. Ability to draft short articles and texts for fact sheets and information materials is desirable. Hands-on experience in photography and/or videography, including basic editing for web and social media is desirable.
Languages
English and french are the working languages of the united nations secretariat. Fluency in english is required for this internship. Knowledge of another official language of the united nations is desirable.
