This position is available starting March 2025 and will be open until filled.

The College of Performing Arts seeks highly motivated students to serve as Research Assistants. We're looking for meticulous and responsible individuals to support initiatives within the Area of Research. This position reports to Pablo Helguera, Assistant Professor of Arts Management and Entrepreneurship and is an ideal position for students who are interested in researching materials that will be utilized for teaching socially engaged and participatory practices in the performing arts.

Research will include the compilation of information, scores, essays and other materials related to the classes taught by John Cage at The New School and its influence in the work of artists that conformed the Fluxus movement, as well as compiling a bibliography of materials related to performing artists who have employed participatory/community and socially engaged practices in their work.

This is a SENS-UAW unit position as per the collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.

This position is open to student applicants with Federal Work Study awards, as well as student applicants without a Federal Work Study award.

Hourly Rate: 30.16 USD per hour

Responsibilities:

Research and compilation the history of John Cage's teaching at the New School

Scanning and digitizing essays related to Cage, Fluxus and socially engaged art practices

Building a bibliography of experimental art practices in the performing arts

Additional responsibilities as assigned to support ongoing research projects and substantive academic tasks associated with course work and/or faculty research.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduate student interested in participatory practices

Interest and basic experience in building a bibliography

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with the New School library system

Active performing arts practice

Interest and investment in the work of John Cage

Current student in a Mannes School of Music (BM, MM, PDPL) or School of Jazz & Contemporary Music (BFA) degree program or MAAME program
