Job Description & How to Apply Below

The School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, one-year position of Lecturer in Discipline, to begin July 1, 2026, renewable for one additional year.

Two positions are available in the fields of American, Comparative (especially with a focus on Southern Asia, Africa, or the Middle East), or International Politics and Policy.

These appointments are intended to strengthen undergraduate instruction, promote civil discourse, nurture academic pluralism, and enhance interdisciplinary teaching across international affairs and the humanities.

The successful candidates will each teach four full-semester courses: two in the fall semester and two in the spring semester. One fall and one spring course will be the undergraduate Columbia College Core Curriculum required year-long course 'Contemporary Civilization'. Successful candidates will also participate in the weekly seminar for new instructors teaching this course. The third and fourth courses will be developed by the successful candidates, reflecting their teaching and research interests, and open to both undergraduate students and SIPA's master's students.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to review carefully the set syllabus for Contemporary Civilization available here.

Successful candidates will participate in public-facing events and institutional initiatives related to civil discourse and intellectual pluralism with a particular focus on programs mounted through SIPA's Institute of Global Politics ("IGP"). Scholars are expected to contribute to the broader campus community through public engagement (e.g., speaker events, panels, op-eds) to the extent possible.

Ph.D. required at the time of appointment. Candidates should have knowledge of major works of moral and political philosophy and a demonstrated record of accomplishment in teaching as well as in an appropriate field of research. Research interests should be policy-relevant.
