JOB SUMMARY

The Engineer-In-Training Program is an MTA Metro-North Railroad initiative to acquire and train the future of our railroad. This program offers recent college graduates an opportunity to develop their management and technical skills through a number of challenging assignments and projects.

The Maintenance of Way (MofW) Department is responsible for building, inspecting, and repairing the physical infrastructure-tracks, switches, signals, and power systems-that ensures safe and reliable train operations, using advanced technology like AI for inspections, investing in modern facilities, and focusing on preventative upkeep, including vegetation management, to handle system growth and meet rider needs.

The Engineer-In-Training (EIT) for the Maintenance of Way
- Power role will gain comprehensive exposure to Power Department operations across the railroad system through a series of rotational assignments. EITs will gain firsthand experience in the planning, execution, and management of Power maintenance activities while developing strong working relationships with local and system management.

Rotational Experience

Participants in the Engineer-In-Training Program will rotate through multiple subdivisions across the system. Each rotation will last approximately 3-4 months, with assignments located at different work locations. Upon completion of one rotation, associates will move to another subdivision to broaden their operational and leadership experience.

During these rotations, participants will:

* Work in different geographic locations and operating environments

* Experience the unique operational characteristics and challenges of each subdivision

* Build professional relationships with local managers, supervisors, and craft employees

Learning and Development

Throughout the program, Engineers - In
- Training will gain practical, hands-on experience in all major aspects of power operations, including:

* Understanding the responsibilities and functions of each work location

* Participating in the planning, coordination, and management of the labor force

* Learning how railroad power infrastructure is inspected, maintained, and renewed

* Gaining insight into the planning required to determine whether work can be safely and effectively completed within allotted time frames

* Participants will also develop a strong understanding of the rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern railroad operations and maintenance activities, and the responsibilities associated with compliance.

Leadership and Technical Growth

The program provides opportunities to gain and expand technical working knowledge while developing leadership and decision-making skills. Participants will be actively involved in:

* Workforce management and daily operational planning

* Resource allocation and work scheduling

* Problem-solving in real-world operating conditions

Program Completion

Upon successful completion of the Engineer-In-Training Program, participants will be prepared to graduate into an entry-level management role within the Power Department. In this role, Engineers will assume responsibilities for and assist with the engineering process of various different power projects while supporting safe, efficient, and reliable railroad operations.

Engineer-In-Training Program General Overview

The Engineer-In-Training Program is an eighteen (18) month training program which includes on-the-job, technical and professional development training. Once an EIT has successfully completed their 18-months, they are promoted into a new role and expected to stay in this role for one (1) year to apply one's learning within the department.

After thirty (30) months (18 months as an EIT and 12 months in your new role) you can apply or advance elsewhere within Metro-North Railroad.

Candidates selected for the program will be placed in one of MNR's Operations departments based on their specialized experience and education. Each department…
