Telecom Engineer
- Substation
The Telecom Engineer
- Substation is responsible for serving as the dedicated Telecom/Fiber technical SME and project owner for a large-scale utility-grade fiber deployment connecting over 100 substations. This role involves owning the technical approach from requirements gathering and fiber/network architecture through RFP/specification development, vendor coordination, field implementation, and system migration.
Responsibilities
- Develop a consistent, scalable fiber architecture.
- Establish clear technical specifications.
- Coordinate vendors and internal stakeholders effectively.
- Support successful deployment and migration across the substation network.
- Manage fiber/network design and architecture.
- Develop technical specifications and RFP documentation.
- Manage vendor/contractor relationships and implementation coordination.
- Coordinate substation deployment.
- Oversee system migration and integration.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of fiber/telecommunications infrastructure experience, including large-scale network design or deployment.
- Experience with utility/substation telecommunications and utility-grade infrastructure.
- Expertise in fiber network design, architecture, cable routing/arrangements, and infrastructure requirements.
- Skilled in technical specification/RFP development, vendor management, and large-scale project coordination.
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 8 years of engineering work experience including at least 3 years in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines, OR Master's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 6 years of engineering work experience including at least 3 years in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with electric utility, critical infrastructure, or geographically distributed infrastructure deployments.
- Experience with telecom equipment, enclosures, commissioning, and legacy system migration.
- Experience coordinating across engineering, construction, procurement, operations, vendors, and contractors in large multi-site deployments.
- Working knowledge of IEC
61850 preferred. - Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF, and other organizations on relay applications preferred.
Licenses
- Driver's license required.
Location
- Ability to travel throughout the company service territory and work at company locations as needed.
Additional Details
- Ability to wear required PPE as needed.
- Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor conditions, including all weather conditions.
- Ability to work in power plants and high voltage substations.
- Physical demands include sitting or standing to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday, and standing to use/operate office equipment for the duration of the workday.
