Finance Intern

The Foundation makes grants in four core program areas - Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place - and through its signature Presidential Initiatives. The Foundation seeks a Finance Intern to support the Finance department.
Team/ Program Overview:
The Finance Intern will support the Finance team with budgeting, financial analysis, reporting, and operational projects. This internship provides hands-on exposure to real-world financial management and an opportunity to learn how finance supports organizational strategy and decision-making. The intern will work closely with finance professionals and gain practical experience in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Learning Opportunities
- Exposure to organizational budgeting, financial planning, and data analysis
- Understanding financial controls, compliance, and reporting requirements
- Experience presenting financial information in a clear, accessible way
- Insight into how finance partners with leadership and operational teams
Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities, including data gathering and analysis
- Support preparation of financial reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal stakeholders
- Help analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and insights
- Help prepare and reconcile general ledger accounts
- Assist with month-end and year-end financial processes
- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, or general ledger activities as needed
- Help document processes and improve financial workflows
- Completion of Junior or Senior year by May 2026 in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with financial systems a plus
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Prior coursework or experience in accounting or financial analysis
- Interest in nonprofit, foundation, or higher education finance
- Experience with data visualization or reporting tools

Mellon is committed to providing compensation that is competitive and equitable within the philanthropic sector. The hourly pay rate for this role is $27-$28. The amount of pay offered is determined by several factors, including but not limited to qualifications, unique skills, credentials, or experience that is expected to impact the candidate's contribution to the role. We also consider market data as well as the Foundation's internal pay equity framework.
Please note that Mellon maintains a hybrid work schedule, with three days per week in person at the Foundation's Manhattan offices.
