Duties and responsibilities
The internship is in the outreach division of the department of global communications, in the ngo relations, advocacy and special events section, which consists of the civil society unit (csu), the creative community outreach initiative (ccoi) and the messenger of peace (mop) programme. The civil society unit connects the un with civil society organizations (csos) affiliated with dgc and assists the department in amplifying information about the un's activities and priority issues (human rights, climate action, gender equality, development, peace and security and the sustainable development goals.
Ccoi promotes partnerships and collaborations with the global entertainment industry, including film, television, documentaries, new media, sport and music; the mop programme coordinates the advocacy work of the un messengers of peace on behalf of the organization and coordinates policy on celebrity advocacy, including goodwill ambassadors, across the un system globally. Two internship positions are available. The internship is for a period of three months (with no possibility of an extension) and the expected start date is 15 may 2026.
The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days a week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. - to assist with screening and reviewing registration applications for high-level events and association with the department supported by csu - to assist with providing support for projects undertaken with external partners from the entertainment or sports industries, such as drafting of background materials, taking meeting notes, etc.
- to assist with monitoring and reporting on social media activities of civil society and celebrity influencers in support of the un; and collating metrics on advocacy engagement.
- to assist with planning and organization of events and other in-person activities at un headquarters.
- to assist with drafting, formatting, editing and posting original content for the team's websites.
- to assist in the drafting of communications materials, including concept notes, talking points, presentations and press releases.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the un internship programme are not required to have professional work experience.
However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially ms word, ms power point, and ms teams. Ability to draft email, publications, or experience with posting content in social media is desirable.
Languages
English and french are the working languages of the united nations secretariat. Fluency in english is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official un language is an desirable. Arabic, chinese, english, french, russian and spanish are the official languages of the united nations secretariat.
