Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
The practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse involves performing tasks and responsibilities within the scope of supportive and restorative care. Tasks include medication administration and specialized tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse or licensed physician or dentist. Nursing care must be delivered in structured and routine situations free of scientific complexity. Assistance with activities of daily living is required.
Responsibilities include the administration of treatments and routine tasks such as suctioning and urinary catheterizations. Prepare patients for surgery, diagnostic tests, treatments, and examinations. Administer medications within the scope of practice. Collect, label, and process specimens accurately. Identify, set up intravenous equipment, and deliver solutions for infusion through peripheral access devices. Administer blood or blood products with special training. Report pertinent observations, treatments, medications, incidents, and accidents associated with patients to the Registered Nurse.
Document nursing care delivered on appropriate forms within the medical record. Recognize the unit-based model for delivery of nursing care and assume responsibility for assignments delegated by the Registered Nurse. Contribute to the nursing care plan in collaboration with other nursing staff. Reinforce the patient and family teaching process identified by the Registered Nurse. Provide emotional support to patients and their families or significant others.
Assist with the rehabilitation of patients according to the nursing care plan. Ensure the physical comfort and safety of patients. Contribute to patient care conferences. Assist in emergency resuscitative procedures by initiating the emergency call and performing resuscitative procedures such as Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
