Position Summary:

The Kwong-Shapiro lab within the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center (ADARC) at Columbia University Medical Center seeks an Associate Research Scientist to work on studies of virus-host interactions and structure-based vaccine design using cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and other biophysical methods. The position will involve being the point person for collaborations with laboratories focused on functional assessment, so the applicant must have excellent communications and leadership skills.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in cryo-EM and ideally also possess experience in X-ray crystallography, molecular modeling, and basic bioinformatics. It is critical that the applicant have experience in recombinant protein production, preferably using mammalian expression systems. Experience in basic molecular biology methods such as immunofluorescence flow cytometry is also desirable.

Specific

Duties include:

  • Participate in experimental designs
  • Plan and execute bench experiments
  • Collect data and perform data analysis
  • Summarize data and write manuscripts
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by the PI
  • Oversee the work of more junior research staff and may direct the implementation of laboratory processes/protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related field.

At least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience

Preferred Qualifications

The applicant should be self-motivated and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present research findings to diverse audiences.

They should also have outstanding organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and be able to work independently as well as within a team
