Work Environment: This position will work full-time from the program site.

Travel: Five days on-site per week and as needed.

About Barrier Free Living (BFL):

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community. Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and nonresidential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence, transitional shelter to the disabled homeless, and outreach to physically disabled individuals with mental health and/or chemical addiction issues. Services include case management; housing placements;

independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services.

About Freedom Village:

Freedom Village is a 74-unit permanent supportive housing residence operated by BFL. Located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the program serves survivors of domestic violence with disabilities and frail elderly individuals (55+), offering a fully accessible and trauma-informed environment. Residents receive comprehensive on-site services including case management, counseling, and occupational therapy to promote safety, healing, and long-term stability.

Role Summary:

The Family Support Coordinator at Freedom Village plays a key role in fostering a supportive, inclusive community for families. This position is responsible for coordinating services and activities while providing comprehensive case management to support family stability, well-being, and self-advocacy. The Family Support Coordinator connects tenants with vital resources, promotes parent and family empowerment, and supports efforts to maintain permanent housing.

This role requires a strong commitment to service coordination, trauma-informed care, and family-centered advocacy within a supportive housing setting.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive, trauma-informed case management to families, including intake, needs assessments, goal planning, and follow-up.
  • Support families in accessing resources such as public benefits, childcare, healthcare, education, legal advocacy, and mental health services.
  • Assist families in navigating systems such as HRA, ACS, DOE, and housing court, and advocate on their behalf as needed.
  • Collaborate with on-site social work and property management teams to ensure coordinated support for tenant stability and safety.
  • Support caregivers to enhance their parenting skills
  • Develop and implement workshops, groups, and events focused on parenting, life skills, youth development, and family enrichment.
  • Maintain inventory and distribute age-appropriate supplies, books, and materials to support children's development and family wellness.
  • Advocate and collaborate with community agencies to support child, family, and agency outcomes; including accompanying to appointments as needed.
  • Provide referrals and information to outside agencies related to child development, recreation, and mental health
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all services and interactions in the agency's case management database.
  • Track and report program outcomes and support compliance with funding and contractual requirements.
  • Participate in case conferences, supervision, staff meetings, and training sessions.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field required;
    Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working with families, preferably in supportive housing, domestic violence, child welfare, or similar settings.
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed care, family systems, and NYC social service systems.
  • Experience working with diverse populations including survivors of domestic violence, people with disabilities, and families facing homelessness.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills.
  • Open to working with diverse populations.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or ASL speaking) preferred.
