About the Role:
The Data Platforms team at The New York Times is looking for a Senior iOS Engineer. This engineer will lead the evolution of foundational behavioral data tools and mobile data infrastructure. These tools and infrastructure power insights across our suite of iOS applications, including News, Games, Cooking, and The Athletic.
You will operate as a technical leader within the iOS and Data ecosystem. You will shape the design, implementation, and maintenance of event collection, experimentation, analytics instrumentation, and mobile data contracts will collaborate closely with product, analytics, and mobile platform teams to ensure data systems are reliable, performant, privacy-conscious, and extensible.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager within the Data Platforms mission. You can typically expect to come into the office 2+ days/week.
Responsibilities:
- Build and ship iOS features by enhancing existing code and creating new functionality from scratch
- Write clean, maintainable code using Swift and SwiftUI
- Participate in code reviews and write unit tests; collaborate with QA to enable robust automated functional tests
- Contribute to app architectural decisions, documentation, technical roadmap and timeline estimations
- Integrate with internal NY Times services and external third-party APIs
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional experience building native iOS applications in Swift
- Expertise in Swift, Swift Concurrency, and modern iOS architectural patterns (e.g., MVVM, unidirectional data flow)
- Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining shared libraries or SDK-style code consumed by multiple teams or applications
- Experience working with analytics systems, event-driven architectures, or experimentation frameworks
- Experience independently owning large technical initiatives from design through rollout
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building mobile platform tooling or internal SDKs
- Familiarity with experimentation systems, feature flags, and A/B testing infrastructure
- Experience optimizing startup time, memory footprint, and runtime performance
- Knowledge of data governance, privacy considerations, and compliance requirements in mobile apps
- Experience working in high-traffic consumer applications at scale
Compensation and Benefits For This Role:
In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000 - $160,000 USD
