Job Title:
Rowing Coach - Learn-to-Row, Youth & Adult Programs


The New York Athletic Club is seeking a full-time Rowing Coach to lead, grow, and manage Learn-to-Row and continuing development programs for youth and adult members at the NYAC Travers Island Boathouse, Pelham Manor, NY. This role focuses on creating high-quality rowing experience on the water and on ergometers-through private lessons, small-group training, and recreational/master's programs. Schedule will include early mornings, evenings, and weekends during the rowing season.

The ideal candidate is an engaging teacher who can work with beginners through intermediate recreational rowers, foster a supportive community environment, promote proper technique, and provide safe, enjoyable, and well-structured training sessions. The coach will help expand rowing participation among NYAC members while maintaining oversight of equipment, practice scheduling, and boathouse operations. This position reports to the Director of Athletics.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Coaching & Instruction
  • Lead Learn-to-Row programs for youth and adults.
  • Deliver one-on-one coaching, small-group lessons, and group classes tailored to member needs and skill levels.
  • Coach on both the water and ergs, teaching stroke fundamentals, fitness development, training habits, and safe rowing practices.
  • Create structured lesson plans and seasonal training outlines that promote progress, engagement, and enjoyment.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and individualized instruction to help members improve technique and confidence.
  • Oversee and mentor part-time or assistant coaches as needed.
Program Development
  • Develop and manage accessible rowing programs for NYAC members, including:
    • Learn-to-Row series
    • Recreational/masters rowing
    • Indoor (erg) training classes
    • Youth recreational rowing (children of members)
  • Recruit and encourage participation among new and existing members.
  • Ensure that program policies, safety standards, and boathouse guidelines are clearly communicated and followed.
Member Service & Engagement
  • Build constructive, positive relationships with members of varied ages and athletic backgrounds.
  • Provide a welcoming environment for new rowers and maintain a focus on member enjoyment and community building.
  • Coordinate private lesson scheduling, group training registrations, and communication with participants.
Boathouse & Equipment Oversight
  • Monitor care and maintenance of rowing equipment including shells, oars, coxing equipment, ergs, and launches.
  • Perform (or coordinate) basic equipment repairs and rigging adjustments.
  • Maintain inventory of boathouse equipment and member-owned shells.
  • Collaborate with NYAC management to ensure boathouse safety, cleanliness, and readiness for use.
Administrative & Logistical Responsibilities
  • Manage practice schedules, group training calendars, and boathouse access.
  • Coordinate participation for any appropriate local regattas (e.g., masters or novice events), including entries, equipment, and logistics.
  • Ensure compliance with NYAC and US Rowing safety requirements.
Qualifications
  • Prior competitive rowing experience and strong technical knowledge of rowing fundamentals.
  • US Rowing Level 2 Coaching Certification (or higher).
  • Experience coaching (4+ years) novice, intermediate, youth, and adult recreational rowers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage in a diverse membership community.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid and Boat Safety certifications.
  • Ability to operate and maintain coaching launches safely.
  • Competence in basic rigging, fleet care, and boathouse operations.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
