Financial Controller

Our client, a New York City based fashion brand with a powerful cultural mission at it's core is looking to hire a Controller.

The Controller will own end-to-end controllership, with particular emphasis on AP management and day-to-day bookkeeping oversight performed by a fractional accounting firm. This role ensures clean books, strong controls, and an on-time close so leadership can trust the numbers and move quickly.

This individual will operate at the intersection of Finance, Operations, and external partners. The ideal candidate is process‑rigorous, hands‑on, and systems‑oriented—someone who can run a weekly AP cycle, improve coding discipline, and build a scalable close and control environment as the business grows.

• Own the AP function end-to-end: invoice intake, coding, approval routing, payment scheduling, and vendor communications.
• Maintain AP aging and a weekly payment run that ties directly to cash availability and leadership priorities.
• Implement controls to prevent duplicate, unauthorized, or miscoded payments.
• Improve vendor onboarding, documentation standards, and the invoice-to-pay workflow.
• Manage the fractional bookkeeping firm as an accountable extension of Denim Tears.
• Set SLAs for transaction processing, response times, and month‑end close deliverables.
• Review day‑to‑day entries for proper classification and completeness.
• Maintain and continuously improve the chart of accounts and coding guidance to keep reporting decision‑useful.

• Own and run a reliable monthly close process (calendar, checklists, dependencies, sign‑offs).
• Review and approve reconciliations for key accounts (cash, AR, AP, inventory, prepaid, accruals, duties/freight, etc.).
• Produce monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, and cash reporting where needed) with clear variance explanations.
• Ensure accurate cutoff and accruals to reduce surprises and rework.

• Build and maintain internal controls (approval limits, segregation of duties, documentation standards).
• Define and uphold accounting policies for critical areas (inventory, COGS, revenue recognition, accruals/prepaids, vendor compliance).
• Prepare schedules and support for external CPA firm, tax providers, banking, and any audit/review processes.

• Maintain short‑term cash visibility tied to AP, payroll timing, and key commitments.
• Partner with leadership on payment timing strategy, vendor term negotiations, and working capital decisions.

• Partner with Operations, Logistics, and Planning/Merchandising to ensure accurate inventory and landed cost accounting.
• Support process improvements across purchasing, receiving, approvals, and expense management.

• 5+ years in accounting/controllership roles (Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar).
• Strong GAAP fundamentals, month‑end close, reconciliations, and AP controls.
• Experience managing external partners (fractional accountants/bookkeepers, CPAs) with clear accountability.
• High attention to detail with the ability to operate in a fast‑moving, evolving environment.

• Experience in consumer goods, e‑commerce, wholesale, apparel, or inventory‑heavy businesses.
• Experience with inventory accounting, landed cost, and COGS.
• Track record of building scalable accounting processes and internal controls.
