Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization in the arts and culture sector, is seeking a Senior Accountant to support its Finance team. This role will focus on maintaining general ledger integrity, supporting month-end close, and ensuring audit readiness while helping to improve accounting processes.

Responsibilities include conducting detailed account reconciliations, preparing and posting journal entries and accruals, and executing monthly bank reconciliations. The role will partner cross-functionally to ensure data consistency and oversee recurring entries and close activities within the accounting system.

Additionally, this position will track and monitor grant funding to ensure compliance and accurate reporting, while playing a key role in clearing a backlog of accounting work, improving workflows, and restoring timely financial operations.

This is a highly visible opportunity for an accounting professional who thrives in a dynamic environment and enjoys driving process improvement and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities General Ledger & Financial Reporting
  • Perform detailed analysis and reconciliation of general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP and internal control standards.
  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations in support of timely financial reporting.
  • Execute monthly bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies promptly to maintain financial integrity.
  • Manage recurring journal entries and oversee month-end close activities within the accounting system.
  • Produce accurate financial statements, variance analyses, and supporting schedules to inform leadership decision-making.
  • Assist in preparing financial reports in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Record and reconcile unrestricted and restricted contribution revenue — including individual donations, foundation grants, government awards, and corporate sponsor ships — in accordance with ASC 958.
  • Record earned revenue from program-related sources, ensuring proper classification and timely recognition in the general ledger.
  • Partner with internal departments to ensure contribution and earned revenue transactions are accurately captured and reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain detailed records of unrestricted and restricted fund activity, ensuring proper revenue recognition and expense allocation.
  • Prepare and maintain a donor‑restricted schedule tracking all restricted contributions, applicable conditions, and the timely release of restrictions upon fulfillment of donor requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Development team to reconcile pledges, contributions, and grant drawdowns.
Compliance, Audit & Internal Controls
  • Maintain well‑organized records of journal entries, bank statements, and supporting documentation for audit readiness.
  • Support the annual external audit and Form 990 preparation by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Assist in identifying control gaps and recommending enhancements to internal control policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for nonprofit entities.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Process Improvement
  • Collaborate across accounting and operational teams to ensure data consistency and quality across systems.
  • Lead initiatives to address backlogs of accounting tasks, improving workflow efficiency and restoring timely financial operations.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline month‑end close, reporting cycles, and documentation workflows.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior accounting staff as needed.
  • Support special projects, ad‑hoc financial analyses, and system implementations as directed by senior finance leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years within a nonprofit organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP, including nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Proven experience with general ledger reconciliation, journal entries, and month‑end close processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant accounting and restricted fund management.
  • Strong proficiency in accounting software.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to meet tight deadlines.
