Position Overview

The Project Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial management and operational success of Wesbuilt projects. This position partners closely with Project Managers, Operations, Estimating, and Finance to support accurate job cost tracking, billing, forecasting, subcontractor coordination, and project financial reporting throughout the lifecycle of a project.

The role is designed for individuals continuing to grow within construction accounting and project financial management. The Project Accountant is expected to develop a strong understanding of project cost structures, financial workflows, and operational processes while helping support financial accountability and reporting consistency across assigned projects.

Success in this role is demonstrated through accurate project financial reporting, timely billing and invoice processing, strong organization and follow-through, effective collaboration with project teams, and proactive support of project financial controls and operational efficiency.

Core Responsibilities & Expectations
  • Support the full project accounting lifecycle from project setup through closeout
  • Maintain accurate job cost tracking, project financial records, and committed cost reporting
  • Monitor project budgets, labor costs, subcontract commitments, change orders, and financial activity
  • Support Project Managers with cost tracking, forecasting, and cost-to-complete reviews
  • Assist with monthly Work in Progress (WIP) reporting and project financial reviews
  • Support month-end close activities and financial reporting
  • Prepare and support owner billings, including AIA progress billings, retainage tracking, and change order billing
  • Ensure billings align with project progress, contract requirements, and internal financial procedures
  • Track accounts receivable and support collection follow-up efforts as needed
  • Coordinate collection and organization of lien waivers and supporting billing documentation
  • Review and process subcontractor requisitions and vendor invoices
  • Match invoices to purchase orders, contracts, and committed costs while identifying discrepancies
  • Support subcontractor compliance tracking, including insurance certificates and lien waiver documentation
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Finance regarding project payables and approvals
  • Assist with preparation of job cost reporting, budget variance analysis, and profitability tracking
  • Maintain organized and audit-ready project financial records
  • Support reconciliation activities and financial reporting accuracy across assigned projects
Systems, Operations & Processes
  • Enter and maintain project financial data within accounting and project management systems
  • Support implementation and improvement of financial workflows and operational processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting accuracy, organization, and workflow efficiency
  • Contribute positively to team collaboration, accountability, and continuous operational improvement
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Operations, Payroll, Estimating, and Finance teams
  • Participate in project financial review meetings and communicate financial updates clearly and professionally
  • Maintain timely communication and follow-through with internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Support special projects and operational initiatives as needed
Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience:

3+ years of project accounting, construction accounting, accounts payable, or related finance experience preferred, preferably within construction management, general contracting, or related industries.

Skills:

Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, required. Experience with Procore, Quick Books, and/or construction-related systems preferred.
