Location: New York

Ascendo Resources is currently seeking a Grant Accountant for a full-time, hybrid role! Salary ranges from $75,000 to $90,000 with fully paid benefits and generous PTO (up to a month in your first year)!

We're partnering with a well-established nonprofit organization (30+ years serving NYC communities).

Job Summary

The Grant Accountant provides organization-wide financial management and oversight for the organization's grant and contract portfolio, including budgeting, financial reporting, vouchering, variance analysis, compliance, and audit support. This role works closely with program staff, the Development team, funders, and auditors to ensure grant funds are managed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with all funding requirements.

Primary Responsibilities Grant Financial Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain effective financial systems and processes to support grant management and reporting
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of all grant-related financial transactions
  • Monitor grant expenditures for alignment with approved budgets, funding agreements, and regulatory requirements
  • Prepare and post journal entries and analyze general ledger activity
  • Review and approve accounts payable vouchers for assigned grant-funded programs
  • Collaborate with Development team and program staff to resolve budgeting, reporting, and compliance issues
Budgeting & Financial Reporting
  • Prepare, manage, and revise grant budgets in collaboration with program managers
  • Prepare and submit grant budgets, invoices, financial reports, schedules, and work papers per funder requirements and deadlines
  • Analyze budget variances and provide recommendations for sound financial decision-making
  • Generate accurate, timely financial reports for grantors and internal stakeholders
Compliance & Audit
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and private funding requirements
  • Prepare for and support internal and external audits, including documentation, schedules, and reconciliations
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and well-organized records of grant-related financial activity
  • Partner with program managers and stakeholders to provide financial guidance for grant-funded initiatives
  • Communicate with funders regarding financial reporting, compliance, and expenditures
  • Train and support staff on grant management policies and best practices
  • Analyze grant financial data to identify trends, variances, risks, and opportunities
  • Recommend and implement enhancements to financial processes and internal controls
  • Stay current on grant accounting standards and regulatory updates
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years of grants accounting and financial management experience
  • Experience managing fiscal requirements of NYC, NYS, federal, and private grants and contracts
  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit grant accounting principles
  • Experience preparing grant budgets, financial reports, vouchers, and supporting funder/agency audits
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting systems
  • Sage Intacct experience highly preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and administrative skills with attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to convey financial information across varying levels of financial knowledge
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality
