The Property Tax Analyst is responsible for supporting property tax and gross receipts tax compliance, accounting, reporting, and regulatory requirements across New York State and local jurisdictions. This role requires a hands‑on accounting and tax professional who can analyze accounting and ERP data, investigate variances and discrepancies, prepare tax accruals and journal entries, develop detailed work papers, and support tax returns and regulatory filings.
The ideal candidate has strong property tax and/or gross receipts tax experience, advanced Excel skills, sound accounting fundamentals, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across tax jurisdictions.
- Prepare property tax and gross receipts tax payments for New York State and applicable local municipalities.
- Prepare property tax and gross receipts tax accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting work papers.
- Prepare and support property tax and gross receipts tax returns and related documentation.
- Analyze accounting and ERP system data to support tax calculations, reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Investigate property tax variances and discrepancies by comparing periods, estimates, actuals, assessments, and related accounting data.
- Cleanse, join, manipulate, and reconcile large datasets in Excel to identify issues and support tax and financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain detailed tax and accounting work papers.
- Initiate property tax grievances and support efforts to settle or litigate grievances.
- Support the preparation of tax schedules for SEC, FERC, PSC, and other regulatory filings.
- Support legislation and litigation matters related to taxation.
- Maintain accurate tax records and documentation across multiple jurisdictions.
- Respond to tax inquiries from internal and external stakeholders while maintaining professional corporate relationships.
- Manage multiple tax deliverables and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
- Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
- 5-8 years of accounting and/or general tax compliance experience.
- Property tax and/or gross receipts tax experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP accounting for property and gross receipts taxes.
- Strong accounting fundamentals, including debits and credits, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, general ledger data, and financial reporting concepts.
- Experience analyzing accounting system data to determine appropriate tax treatment and support tax calculations.
- Strong Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, lookups, formulas, filtering and sorting large datasets, data reconciliation, variance analysis, data cleansing, and data manipulation.
- Ability to take accounting or ERP system data, analyze it in Excel, identify discrepancies or variances, and reach a sound conclusion.
- Experience preparing or supporting property tax returns and/or gross receipts tax returns preferred.
- Experience working with multiple tax jurisdictions and supporting tax payments and regulatory filings.
- Familiarity with ERP systems preferred, particularly Oracle BI and Oracle EBS.
- Familiarity with property tax accounting software, particularly Power Plan-Property Tax, preferred.
- Familiarity with the NYC Department of Finance Property Tax Public Access Web Portal preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet aggressive deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
- Strong presentation, facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential financial and tax information professionally.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical problem‑solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or another business-related discipline.
- Master's degree or CPA license preferred.
- 5-8 years of accounting and/or general tax compliance experience.
- Experience in property tax accounting and analysis preferred.
- Experience with Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) preferred.
- Experience with property tax variance analysis preferred.
- Experience preparing or supporting property tax and gross receipts tax returns preferred.
- Experience preparing tax accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and detailed tax work papers preferred.
- Experience reconciling accounting or ERP data to tax reporting preferred.
- Experience supporting multiple tax jurisdictions and regulatory filings preferred.
