Controller | Privately Held Family Office / Investment & Operating Company | New Hyde Park
A well-established, privately held family office based in Lake Success is seeking an experienced Controller / Director of Finance & Operations to oversee the accounting and day-to-day business operations of the principal’s corporate office and several closely held entities.
This position is replacing a long-tenured CFO who is departing after more than 20 years with the organization. As the principal’s larger operating businesses have developed their own dedicated finance and accounting teams, the needs of the corporate office have evolved into a more hands-on accounting and operational leadership role.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned accounting and operations professional who enjoys working within a stable, entrepreneurial, closely held environment and is comfortable wearing multiple hats. This individual will serve as the principal’s primary financial and business-minded resource within the office, with responsibility spanning accounting, financial oversight, office operations, HR, payroll, benefits, insurance, banking, and vendor management.
Responsibilities:- Oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial operations for the corporate office and several small, non-operating entities
- Manage the monthly close process, general ledger, reconciliations, journal entries, and maintenance of accurate books and records
- Prepare and review periodic financial reporting for the principal
- Review financial statements and reporting provided by the finance teams of affiliated operating businesses, serving as an additional layer of oversight
- Perform financial analysis and provide insight to the principal as needed
- Coordinate with outside accounting, tax, and audit firms and ensure timely delivery of requested information
- Maintain banking relationships and oversee cash management and related banking activity
- Manage key vendor relationships and corporate administrative matters
- Oversee insurance programs, including credit insurance, and assist in managing exposure to potential bad debt
- Coordinate employee benefits renewals, negotiations, and administration
- Provide oversight of payroll, HR administration, and employee-related matters
- Coordinate with outside IT providers and other third-party service partners
- Take ownership of general office operations and serve as a central resource for business and administrative matters
- Maintain accounting records within the company’s existing Sage accounting system
- Handle special projects and ad hoc financial or operational requests for the principal
- Approximately 20+ years of progressive accounting, finance, and/or business operations experience
- Strong hands-on accounting background with experience owning the general ledger and month-end close process
- Prior experience within a family office, privately held company, closely held business, entrepreneurial organization, or similar owner-operated environment
- Broad exposure to operational responsibilities beyond traditional accounting, ideally including areas such as payroll, benefits, HR administration, insurance, banking, or vendor management
- Ability to review financial reporting, identify inconsistencies, and provide practical analysis to ownership
- Experience working with outside tax, audit, and accounting firms
- Comfortable operating as a hands-on individual contributor while also overseeing broader office and business matters
- Strong judgment, maturity, discretion, and communication skills
- Sage experience is helpful but not required; willingness to work within an established legacy accounting environment is important
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional seeking a stable, long-term position within a highly established private organization. The environment offers significant autonomy, direct access to ownership, broad responsibility, and the opportunity to become a trusted long-term partner to the principal.
The organization has a history of strong employee retention and values mature, experienced professionals who take ownership of their responsibilities and are interested in finding a long-term professional home.
