The Manager, Payroll Tax oversees multi-state, multi-FEIN payroll tax operations in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. This role leads payroll tax compliance, filings, deposits, reconciliations, amendments, year-end processing, audits, and related controls. The Manager will lead the payroll tax team and partner closely with Payroll, HRIS, Finance, and external vendors to ensure accurate and timely tax administration.
What You’ll Do- Lead payroll tax operations across multiple states, localities, and FEINs, ensuring accurate and timely filings, deposits, and reconciliations.
- Manage, coach, and develop payroll tax team members.
- Oversee tax amendments, agency notices, penalties, and escalations, partnering with ADP Smart Compliance as needed.
- Lead year-end processing, including W-2 and W-2c preparation, validation, distribution, and corrections.
- Monitor federal, state, and local tax regulations and implement required process and system changes.
- Maintain strong payroll tax controls, procedures, and documentation to support compliance and audit readiness.
- Partner with Payroll and HRIS teams to ensure accurate tax setups, employee profiles, and configurations within Oracle Fusion Cloud Payroll.
- Manage payroll tax activities related to mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, including due diligence, FEIN setup, and tax transitions.
- Lead internal and external payroll tax audits and oversee remediation efforts.
- Analyze complex tax discrepancies, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
- Manage payroll tax vendors and agency relationships, including service performance and issue resolution.
- Lead system testing, process improvements, automation, and other payroll tax projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Human Resources, or a related field preferred.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification required.
- 7+ years of multi-state, multi-FEIN payroll tax experience in a high-volume environment.
- Previous experience leading or managing payroll tax professionals.
- Hands‑on experience with Oracle Fusion Cloud Payroll required.
- Experience with ADP Smart Compliance, payroll tax amendments, and agency notice resolution required.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations and year‑end requirements.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and large‑data‑set analysis.
- Strong leadership, analytical, communication, and project management skills.
- Canadian payroll tax experience is a plus.
