Job Description
HireIQ is partnering with an award-winning engineering consultancy to appoint an Assistant Controller who can develop into the company’s next Controller
.
This is not a traditional long-term Assistant Controller position. The successful candidate will work closely with the existing Controller and CFO, gaining exposure across the full accounting function with the intention of progressing into the Controller role as part of the company’s succession plan
.
The position offers ownership across project accounting, financial reporting, FAR compliance, indirect rates, close, audits, forecasting and team leadership within a well-established engineering business.

The Role
You will initially work alongside the Controller while taking increasing responsibility for the accounting department and preparing to step into broader leadership.
Responsibilities will include:
- Oversee billing, AR, AP, GL, payroll, cost accounting and revenue recognition
- Lead monthly and annual close processesli>
Oversee project accounting, WIP, job costs and project profitability - Prepare executive and Board-level financial reporting
- Manage FAR compliance and indirect-cost-rate calculations
- Support government-agency overhead submissions
- Lead external audits and strengthen internal controls
- Partner with Project Managers and operational leadership
- Support forecasting, budgeting, cash flow and strategic planning
- Lead, mentor and develop accounting staff
- Work closely with the Controller and CFO on the eventual transition of leadership responsibilities
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Senior Accounting, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller or Controller-level experience
- Architecture, engineering or environmental-consulting experience strongly preferred
- Strong project-accounting knowledge
- Experience with FAR and indirect cost rates
- Proven ownership of close, financial reporting and audits
- Experience managing and developing accounting teams
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA preferred
This is particularly suited to someone who has reached Assistant Controller / senior accounting leadership level and wants a genuine route into a Controller position
