The Accounting Manager role at Bellwether is a hands-on, detail-oriented position responsible for managing the financial operations of Canadian and U.S. entities. Reporting to the CFO, the manager will handle day-to-day accounting, month-end closing, financial reporting, and audit support while leveraging accounting systems. The role involves consolidating financial information, supporting IFRS reporting, and coordinating internal and outsourced accounting resources to build a centralized North American accounting function.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for Canadian and U.S. entities.
  • Support the preparation of consolidated financial information and related supporting schedules.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaids, reconciliations, intercompany entries, and other month-end close items.
  • Review accounting records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate classification of transactions.
  • Work directly in Quick Books Online and other accounting systems used by the group to process, review, reconcile, and analyze accounting information.
  • Enter invoices, create and maintain vendor records, review supporting documentation, and ensure expenses are coded to the appropriate entity, account, tax treatment, and reporting period.
  • Prepare payment batches and enter payments into banking platforms or other payment systems, subject to established review and approval controls.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of consistent accounting processes across Canadian and U.S. entities.
  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial reporting packages for management, the leadership team, and the Board.
  • Ensure accounting records and financial statements are prepared in accordance with applicable accounting policies, including International Financial Reporting Standards.

Month End Close and Controls

  • Lead the month-end close process for assigned entities and ensure reporting deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate month-end close activities with Bellwether’s Canadian finance team, outsourced U.S. accounting resources, and local operating teams.
  • Review bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, accounts payable activity, payroll-related entries, and supporting schedules.
  • Develop and maintain month-end close checklists and recurring reporting processes.
  • Identify process gaps, control weaknesses, or inefficiencies and recommend practical improvements.
  • Support the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Ensure financial records are organized, accurate, complete, and audit-ready.

Audit and External Reporting Support

  • Support the annual audit process and act as a key day-to-day contact for audit requests.
  • Prepare audit schedules, working papers, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate internally to obtain information required by external auditors.
  • Assist with technical accounting analysis and documentation, including accounting memos where required.
  • Support the CFO in ensuring audit deliverables are completed accurately and on time.
  • Assist with accounting and reporting requirements for acquisitions, integrations, and other corporate initiatives.

Budgeting, Forecasting and Analysis

  • Support the annual budget process for Canadian and U.S. entities.
  • Prepare budget-to-actual and prior-period variance analysis.
  • Work with business leaders to understand financial results, key drivers, and operational trends.
  • Prepare financial analysis to support decision-making, including revenue, expense, profitability, cash flow, and headcount analysis.
  • Assist with forecasting, scenario analysis, and financial modelling as required.
  • Support the CFO and leadership team with ad hoc analysis and special projects.

Team Coordination and Accounting Support

  • Oversee and coordinate the work of Bellwether’s Canadian accounting administrator, including invoice processing, bank reconciliations, and accounting support activities.
  • Coordinate with outsourced U.S. accounting support resources, including work related to Bellwether’s U.S. operations.
  • Coordinate with local operating teams to transition accounting, AP, reporting, audit support, and finance-related workflows into a more centralized accounting model.
