The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) is accepting applications for Automotive Facilities Inspector and Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee 1/2 positions serving Region 6, which includes Kings, Queens and Richmond counties.
This is a permanent, full-time NY HELPS opportunity based with DMV Vehicle Safety Field Services in Jamaica, Queens. The position involves extensive field work and regular travel throughout the assigned region.
What You’ll DoAutomotive Facilities Inspectors help protect consumers and ensure that automotive businesses comply with New York State laws and regulations.
Responsibilities may include:- Investigating consumer complaints involving automotive repair and service businesses
- Interviewing consumers, automotive facilities and other involved parties
- Inspecting vehicles and components to evaluate repair or maintenance work
- Using diagnostic equipment and reviewing OBD-II related issues
- Reviewing invoices, estimates, purchase orders and other repair documentation
- Helping mediate disputes between consumers and automotive businesses
- Collecting and preparing evidence
- Writing detailed investigation and inspection reports
- Conducting inspections and compliance audits of licensed or regulated automotive facilities
- Testifying at administrative hearings or court proceedings when required
- Making recommendations based on investigation findings
Candidates may qualify at different appointment levels depending on their experience:
Automotive Facilities Inspector – Grade 16:- 5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic, automotive diagnostician or automotive technician instructor
- Experience must include diagnosis and repair of OBD-II systems
- 4 years of qualifying automotive experience as described above
- 3 years of qualifying automotive experience as described above
Because the lowest appointment level requires three years of relevant experience, candidates with at least three years of qualifying automotive experience may be considered.
NY HELPSThis position participates in the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) program.
For NY HELPS appointments, candidates who meet the minimum qualifications may be hired without first taking a traditional Civil Service examination.
Driver’s LicenseThe position requires extensive daily travel. Candidates must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment.
ASE Certification RequirementEmployees appointed at the Trainee 1, Trainee 2 or full Automotive Facilities Inspector level must obtain a total of five qualifying ASE certifications or passing score reports from the Automobile/Light Truck (A Series) and/or Medium/Heavy Truck (T Series) before completing the applicable traineeship or probationary period.
Language OpportunitiesThe Automotive Facilities Inspector title series may also include language-specific positions, including Chinese, Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian and Spanish. Candidates appointed to a language-specific title must pass the applicable Civil Service language proficiency examination.
Schedule- Full-time
- 37.5 hours per week
- Monday through Friday
- Typical schedule:
8:30 AM to 4:30 PM - Extensive field work and travel — approximately 75%

Salary$56,183–$79,795 per year, depending on appointment level.
Employees assigned to the five boroughs of New York City or certain downstate counties receive an additional $4,150 annual downstate adjustment.
