The NYU Steinhardt Department of Media, Culture, and Communication seeks a part-time (20 hours per week) Archivist to support Marking Time, a project that fosters the role of art and artists in the social justice movement to end mass incarceration.
Position SummaryLed by Dr. Nicole R. Fleetwood, the Marking Time project aims to research, archive, exhibit, and amplify artists and activists in their efforts to transform prisons, criminalization, and policing in the United States. The Archivist will work with Dr. Fleetwood in all aspects of the project. The primary duties of this position are:
- Coordinate and support collaborators and working group participants in research needs related to incarceration, criminalization, art and creative expression, and activism.
- Help to identify relevant archives, sources to support the research needs of participating faculty, students, artists, and community researchers.
- Co-manage archival initiatives related to Marking Time.
- Co-supervise graduate researcher.
- Be a resource to those creating research‑based writing, art, and curriculum related to criminalization, incarceration, immigration, and art and cultural expression.
- Manage communication and publicity related to Marking Time initiatives.
- Gather, refine, and interpret art, documentation, and qualitative research (interviews and focus groups) to learn about the lived experiences and needs of people impacted by criminalization, detainment, exile, and imprisonment.
The position is a hybrid combination of remote and in‑person work, with the in‑person work occurring at the NYU Washington Square Campus. The position will include co‑supervisory responsibilities for one graduate student researcher.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly pay range for this position is $35.00-$40.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Required EducationMaster’s degree
Preferred EducationPh.D.
Required ExperienceTwo or more years of related experience in art, creative expression, and activism.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Ability to interact with a diverse population at all levels.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation and communication.
- Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office software and Adobe Acrobat, as well as basic website updating and social media platforms.
