Duties Description

The Campgrounds Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and administering regional campground operations, recreation program funding, planning, personnel support, and special initiatives. The position serves as the primary liaison between regional staff, Lands and Forests (L&F), local stakeholders, and campground management to ensure consistent implementation of recreation programs and fiscal accountability. Coordinating and administering the operations of a regional campground program consisting of four campgrounds, with a FY 2026-27 operating budget of $710,000 in Personal Service funding and $235,000 in Non-Personal Service funding.

The position provides leadership in operational planning, budget management, staffing coordination, customer service, maintenance oversight, revenue management, and regulatory compliance to ensure the safe and efficient operation of some of New York State's most heavily visited public recreation facilities.

Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

Minimum Qualifications For Non-competitive Appointment

Bachelor’s degree, plus one year of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.

or

Associate’s degree, plus two years of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.

or

Four years of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.

Reassignment or Reinstatement Eligible

Reassignment
- Currently in the title of Campgrounds Program Coordinator and an employee of DEC.

or

Reinstatement Eligible
- Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis.

Additional Comments

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Travel may be required.

Overtime may be required.

Overnight travel may be required.

Weekends and holidays may be required.

Must provide 24-hour response on a rotational basis and work during normal business hours.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds.
