Mercy First is a not‑for‑profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since its founding by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today we address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life‑changing interventions. We provide community‑based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short‑term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children.

Each year Mercy First serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families, helping them overcome obstacles, re‑imagine their futures and develop their full potential.

Position Details

TITLE: Case Aide
LOCATION: Ozone Park
REPORTS TO: Director of the Program
DEPARTMENT: Family Support Services
SCHEDULE: Full‑Time
Hiring Incentive: $1,000 after 500 worked hours

Program Background

Family Support Programs provide family‑focused assistance utilizing a Solution‑Based Casework model which focuses on goals to stabilize and support families. The program promotes skill acquisition and behavior change that align with child‑wellbeing outcomes.

Summary of Position

The Case Aide embraces diversity and an open mind when working with the families we serve. This employee documents all contacts in appropriate computer systems within established time limits, responds to client requests for information, and handles emergencies as needed or directed. The case aide meets each child, assesses needs individually, and determines if the child meets assessment requirements. The case aide communicates effectively with parents and everyone involved in the family’s life—medical staff, schools, lawyers, and more—conducts thorough safety hazard inspections of homes, promotes a team spirit by collaborating with the case worker and family team coordinator, and remains flexible with time and appointment arrangements.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma and related work in the social work field.
  • Minimum six (6) months of office and/or casework experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to de‑escalate conflicting communication.
  • Typing speed of at least thirty‑five (35) words per minute (wpm).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to file and track case information through paper and data entry.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct home visits with birth parents, foster parents, and/or resource persons in accordance with mandates.
  • Document all contacts in appropriate computer systems within established time limits.
  • Monitor and document each home visit, family/sibling visits.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed or directed.
  • Answer and direct phone calls appropriately.
  • Respond to client requests for information.
  • Maintain timely data entry into multiple computer systems.
  • Maintain tracking systems of reports due and completed.
  • Maintain mail distribution/processing.
  • Provide general typing and filing support.
  • Manage extensive paperwork.
  • Communicate with lawyers, doctors, school personnel and other family stakeholders.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Follow all Mercy First policies and procedures.
  • Understand and commit to Mercy First’s mission, core values, Sanctuary commitments, and DEIB principles.

Salary Range

$43,779 – $47,779.
