CHILDREN’S CENTER KEEPER, PART-TIME

Staten Island Zoo is an AZA accredited facility with a diverse and unique animal collection. We are looking for a part-time keeper to join our Children’s Center staff. This keeper will work with domestic small ruminants, camelids, pigs, waterfowl, exotic poultry, large rodents, giant tortoises and ratites. This is a great opportunity for early-career keepers to gain experience with a diverse range of taxa in a busy, challenging environment.

Core responsibilities include:

• Routine husbandry following established SOPs for cleaning, feeding, health/welfare monitoring.
• Observe and report changes in animal behavior, appetite, demeanor, or comfort, as well as reporting safety concerns relating to exhibits, animals, and visitors.
• Supervise visitors in the petting zoo and monitor visitors throughout the children’s zoo to ensure safety of visitors and animals.
• Follow all safety protocols; active participation in safety training and drills
• Maintain professional demeanor: respect social media policy; polite interaction with visitors of all backgrounds; ability to receive feedback from supervisors

Additional responsibilities, for which on-the-job training is available, include:

• Adherence to an enrichment calendar and recording enrichment evaluations
• Participation in positive reinforcement training programs
• Assist with animal capture, restraint, and medical procedures
• Standard record keeping including daily reports in ZIMS, keeper journals, and welfare checklists

Working with domestic and wild animals x 6 months

$20.00/hr, PART-TIME: 4 days/ week
