Soils Inspectors – Building & Infrastructure Projects (Immediate)

Location: Greater New York City Metropolitan Area (Project Location Varies)

Status: Part Time as Needed

Duration: Extended

Compensation: $30/hr – $40/hr based on Certification & Experience

Role Overview

The Soils / Geotechnical Inspector provides specialized inspection, testing, and verification services for earthwork, foundations, and geotechnical construction activities on Building & Infrastructure projects throughout the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area. This role supports both Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs in accordance with 1 RCNY §101-06, Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, the International Building Code (IBC), and applicable geotechnical standards.

The inspector verifies that subsurface construction activities, materials, and installations conform to approved geotechnical reports, design documents, specifications, and code requirements. Typical work includes inspection of site preparation, excavation, subgrade preparation, structural fill placement, compaction, foundations, and soil improvement systems.

Responsibilities
  • Work responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Inspection of site preparation, excavation, and subgrade conditions
    • Observation of structural fill placement, lift thickness, and compaction
    • Perform or Witness Field density testing with a Nuclear Moisture Density Gauge
    • Review laboratory test results
    • Inspection of shallow and deep foundation elements (spread footings, caissons, piles, micro-piles)
    • Oversight of soil improvement methods (e.g., ground improvement, grouting, compaction methods)
  • Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or night shifts depending on project requirements and concrete placement schedules.
  • Reporting & Documentation:
    • Prepare and submit daily inspection and test reports within required timeframe.
    • Utilize client or company reporting platforms as required.
    • Maintain organized and auditable inspection records.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience inspecting construction work in the city of NY, varied in size and complexity.
  • Familiarity with 101-06 and Chapter 17 of the NYC building code and the International Building Code.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification taken within the last 5 years.
  • Well versed in all aspects of construction and QA/QC responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with applicable Soils & Geotechnical Systems.
  • Training and/or knowledge in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, & work-zone safety.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Physical abilities applicable to construction projects in the City of New York, ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate active construction sites.
  • Currently holds certification as one or more of the following:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (accredited institution or equivalent)
    • ICC Certification Soils Special Inspector
    • NICET Level I, II, or III Geotechnical Certification
Additional Skills
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues and clients of all levels.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings & specifications.
  • Reliable means of transportation & valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to learn and obtain additional certifications.
  • Works well with a team and independently.
  • Familiarity with construction industry codes.
  • Mathematical knowledge for problem solving.
  • Ability to provide inspection reports in a timely manner.
