Role Overview
The Structural Steel Inspector provides specialized inspection, testing oversight, and verification services for steel fabrication and erection activities on Building & Infrastructure projects throughout the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area. This role supports both Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs in accordance with 1 RCNY §101-06, Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, the International Building Code (IBC), and applicable industry standards.
The Structural Steel Inspector is responsible for verifying that structural steel materials, fabrication, welding, bolting, erection, and associated construction activities conform to approved contract documents, structural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and code requirements. This includes inspection of Fracture Critical Members (FCMs), moment frames, braced frames, connections, and load-bearing steel systems.
This position requires an active on-site presence during fabrication (when required), steel erection, welding, bolting, and testing activities, including witnessing required inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), and verification of corrective actions. The inspector coordinates closely with fabricators, erectors, contractors, construction managers, special inspectors, testing agencies, and client representatives to ensure inspections are performed at the appropriate stages of work.
The Structural Steel Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring structural integrity, load-path continuity, seismic performance, and code compliance, proactively identifying non-conforming conditions, issuing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), and verifying repairs and re-inspections in accordance with approved procedures.
- Work responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Inspection of structural steel fabrication and erection activities
- Verification of material certifications, mill test reports, and traceability
- Inspection of welding procedures, welder qualifications, and weld execution
- Inspection of bolted connections (snug-tight, pretensioned, slip-critical)
- Verification of steel alignment, plumbness, and tolerances
- Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or night shifts depending on project requirements and concrete placement schedules.
- Travel to various Fabrication Shops may be required.
- Reporting & Documentation Requires you to:
- Prepare and submit daily inspection and test reports within required timeframe.
- Utilize client or company reporting platforms as required.
- Maintain organized and auditable inspection records.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience inspecting construction work in the city of NY, varied in Size and complexity. Projects may include commercial high-rise buildings, residential towers, transportation infrastructure, utilities, institutional facilities, and public-sector construction.
- Familiarity with 101-06 and Chapter 17 of the NYC building code and the International Building Code.
- Holds OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification taken within the last 5 years.
- Well versed in all aspects of construction and QA/QC responsibilities.
- Familiarity with applicable Soils & Geotechnical Systems.
- Training and/or knowledge in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, & work-zone safety.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Physical Abilities applicable to construction projects in the City of New York and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate active construction sites, including climbing ladders, scaffolding, and walking uneven surfaces.
- Currently holds certification as in one or more of the following:
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (AWS-CWI)
- AWS Certified Associate Welding Inspector (AWS-CAWI)
- ICC Certification as a Structural Welding Inspector (ICCSWI)
- ICC Certification as a Structural Steel and Bolting Inspector
