Location: New York
Responsibilities
- Visit multiple project sites each day, sometimes up to ten locations depending on workflow, across parks and city streets.
- Meet the site superintendent at the assigned job site by 7:00 a.m. and remain present during active work hours.
- Observe and oversee contractors on site performing activities such as saw cutting, excavation, planting, concrete restoration, and related construction tasks.
- Manage and coordinate both small and large contractors working on sidewalks, tree‑related work, and park projects.
- Communicate regularly with the project manager, including responding to daily emails with assignments and coordinating staffing needs on site.
- Ensure that adequate personnel and resources are present to complete scheduled work safely and efficiently.
- Collaborate closely with the Parks Department and contractors to keep work progressing according to specifications and project requirements.
- Use the project specification book, understand its contents, and apply relevant specifications to field activities and contractor oversight.
- Review contract line items and verify that work performed aligns with the contract scope and pay items.
- Record, track, and verify measurements for pay items, including quantities such as number of trees planted and excavation volumes, to support accurate contractor payment.
- Perform daily field reporting and documentation of construction oversight, inspections, and site conditions.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety requirements on site, including verifying that contractors wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices.
- Conduct construction oversight tasks at ground level only, without climbing or working on active roadways.
- Confirm that all activities remain at land level and do not involve tree pruning or work in traffic lanes.
- Maintain clear, professional written and verbal communication with the client, project managers, and field personnel.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while making sound field decisions and escalating issues when necessary.
- Associate degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, plant science, construction project management, civil engineering, or a related field plus 2 years of related work experience such as tree protection, pruning, installation and establishment, or other construction services directly related to the contract work; OR
- Bachelor’s degree plus 1 year of related experience; OR
- Master’s degree plus 6 months of related experience; OR
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant field experience in forestry, landscape, civil engineering, construction oversight, or inspection.
- Experience with construction oversight and inspection activities related to parks, sidewalks, trees, or similar civil projects.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply project specifications and contract documents, including spec books and contract line items.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with clients, project managers, contractors, and public agencies.
- Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision while managing multiple sites and tasks.
- Capability to perform daily field reporting and maintain accurate records of work performed and measurements for pay items.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year.
- Access to a vehicle to travel to and between work sites across the city.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and the ability to enforce safety practices, including proper use of PPE on site.
Skills & Qualifications
- knowledge in forestry, civil engineering, landscape, soil science, plant science, tree care, excavation, or parks-related work.
- Knowledge of plant species and basic plant health considerations.
- Experience working for a landscaping company for multiple years or summers, particularly involving planting, tree care, or site preparation.
- Experience with tree‑related construction services such as tree protection, installation, and establishment.
- Familiarity with urban parks environments and street tree planting projects.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple daily site visits and coordinate with various stakeholders.
