This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating search for an Inspector/Superintendent to support the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Small Business Mentoring Program (SBMP) in the New York Metro Area.

The program operates under the umbrella of the MTA’s Small Business Development Program (SBDP), which is dedicated to advancing the capabilities of emerging and experienced construction contractors through a combination of classroom instruction, hands‑on training, and technical guidance in prime contracts with MTA agencies. By supporting and mentoring small businesses, this position plays a pivotal role in cultivating successful enterprises, broadening the pool of competitive, qualified contractors, and fostering economic growth, particularly within disadvantaged communities.

The Small Business Mentoring Projects span the New York metropolitan area, serving all MTA agencies—including New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, Bridges and Tunnels, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro‑North Railroad—with typical contract values ranging from $1 million to $5 million.

This position will oversee construction work performed by small business contractors and mentor the small business contractors on how to perform the tasks necessary to successfully complete MTA projects. This role covers construction sites throughout all five boroughs of New York City
. As the program develops, future construction sites may include areas beyond New York City. Traveling will be required to work sites. The Inspector/Superintendent will join WSP USA’s Project Management and Construction Management (PMCM) Team, a globally recognized professional services consulting firm specializing in transportation and infrastructure projects.

  • Prepare detailed daily reports documenting work performed, project progress, and any issues encountered, and accurately enter data and reports into the web‑based construction management software application. Assist in preparation of 2‑week look ahead schedules.
  • Support project staff in performing field tests on construction materials and review submittals such as shop drawings and work plans for compliance. Schedule and facilitate special inspections as required by project specifications.
  • Coordinate with MTA personnel for site inspections, site access, safety requirements, protection measures, and overall project management. Assist in subcontractor coordination.
  • Verify and calculate quantity payment items to support contract payment processes.
  • Address field concerns and resolve schedule impacts in collaboration with the General Superintendent and/or Project Manager; review contract documents in advance to anticipate, identify, and communicate potential project issues to the Project Manager and/or MTA management, and report all contract discrepancies and differing site conditions in a timely manner.

  • Mentor MTA Small Business Contractors to ensure their performance and submissions meet all project completion requirements.
  • Work in diverse railroad construction environments and under various weather conditions, with flexibility for day, night, and weekend shifts as necessary.
